Magic Resistance. The blade has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Shattering demise. The bladed horror shatters in an explosion of metal shards and energy when reduced to 0 hp. Every creature in a 10 feet radius must then succeed a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or suffer 5(1d10) Slashing damageplus 5 (1d10) Force damage. The blade then is disintegrated or temporarily goes back to dormancy (see the description below).
Latent Enchantment. The bladed horror’s Arcane Blade and Shattering Demise secondary damage type (showing Force damage in this template), should be adapted to another type of damage if more relevant with the original sword, like Fire for a Flame Tongue or Cold for a Frost Brand.
Multiattack. The blade makes two Arcane Blade attacks.
Arcane Blade. Melee Attack Roll: +6, reach 5 ft. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) Slashing damage plus 5 (1d10) Force damage.
Focused hatred. When hit by an opponent, the blade can use its reaction to focus its hatred against this enemy. The blade gains Advantage on his attack rolls against this hated enemy until the of its next turn.
Description
The bladed horror is a mad intelligent sword whose psyche and long forgotten cursed magic went chaotic and in a sort of rampage quest. It is now drawn to slash and pierce any living being it comes across.
To become a bladed horror horror, a powerful sentient bladed magic weapon must be left without a wearer for a very long time, wether after a dramatic event or into a very cursed area, that resonated with the weapon’s core purpose. The weapon fall into a sort of identity crisis and it’s magic is altered, changing it’s form to a bigger, barbed and sinister version of what it was… it animates and is now Madelyn driven to spill blood, essentially caught in an everlasting nightmare.
The bladed horror cannot generally go very far of where it’s original sword form fell or were let, staying a radius of a 100 feet maximum. If it is beaten and reduced to 0 HP, it has 1 chance out of ten to disintegrate and be lost forever. If not, the weapon takes back its initial form and regain it’s original place, for 1d10 minutes, before animating again at full HP, ready to hack again. If someone takes the weapon in the meantime, it is automatically attuned to this new wearer. The wearer also becomes automatically aware of the wepon existential crisis and that it can only be cured after at least one week of continual attunement to its new wearer. After this time, the wearer must succeed at a Charisma (Persuasion) or Wisdom(Insight) test DC20 to help the weapon find its new purpose. In case of failure, a new test can be attempted each week.
Having found back its purpose, the weapon is then again a sentient magical item with no risk of running into a new crisis.
DMs can use this Construct to introduce an important magic item as a memorable encounter, as a player has to « tame » the troubled relic and bound with it. Don’t forget then to roleplay the weapon’s personality and quirks.
As an exemple of a higher level encounter, the Bladed Horror, paired with a Fire elemental, might refer to the fractured psyche of a Flame Tongue sword needing to be reunited. Fire and Steel merging back, only if both creatures are defeated before the Bladed Horror can reanimate again
