Death Burst. The gas spore explodes when it drops to 0 hit points. Each creature within 30 feet of it must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 16 (3d8) poison damage and become infected with a disease on a failed save. On a success the damage is halved and they are not infected with the disease. Creatures immune to the poisoned condition are immune to this disease.
Spores invade an infected creature’s system, killing the creature in a number of hours equal to 1d12 + the creature’s Constitution score, unless the disease is removed. In half that time, the creature becomes poisoned for the rest of the duration. After the creature dies, it sprouts 2d4 Tiny gas spores that grow to full size in 7 days.
Eerie Resemblance. The gas spore resembles a beholder. A creature that can see the gas spore can discern its true nature with a successful DC 18 Intelligence (Nature) check.
The Ancient Gas Spore makes 1d4 Touch attacks and one Spore Cloud attack.
Touch. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 1d12 poison damage, and the creature must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or become infected with the disease described in the Death Burst trait.
Spore Cloud. The Ancient Gas Spore emits a spore-laced gas cloud in a 30 foot radius around itself. It is invisible and scentless but can be detected with a successful DC 16 Nature check allowing the character to roll the Eerie Resemblance save again. Roll 1d4 to determine the effects on creatures within the radius, as follows:
1. Creatures must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 4 rounds or until they succeed on a save they roll at the beginning of each of their turns.
2. Creatures must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or become blinded for 3 rounds or until they succeed on a save they roll at the beginning of each of their turns.
3. Creatures must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or become paralyzed for 2 rounds or until they succeed on a save they roll at the beginning of each of their turns.
4. Creatures must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 1d12 + 4 necrotic damage, or half as much on a save.
Each effect can only be used once until all 4 have been used at which time they all reset. The 1d4 is re-rolled until an unused effect is rolled and the final unused effect is automatically chosen.
Upon taking damage from any source the Ancient Gas Spore can use its reaction to make a Spore Cloud attack.
Description
Gas Spores are said to have grown from the carcass of a fallen Beholder, thus taking on a striking resemblance to them and often fooling adventurers. This certainly seems to be the case with this particular fungus which has grown in this cavern for what would be several typical lifespans of its kind who most often are caused to explode from some form of physical contact eventually. This ancient mushroom has developed strange spore-gasses whose effects imitate those inflicted by the beholders it mimics in form as well, thus deepening the illusion.
