Traits

Mindless. The Barnacle has no brain or senses. It is immune to any mind-altering effects of any kind. Despite what is indicated in the above statblock, the Barnacle's Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma and Passive Perception should all be considered to be 0.

Immobile. The Barnacle stays where it is, fixed to the ceiling permanently. Despite what is indicated in the above statblock, the Barnacle's Dexterity should be considered to be 0.

No One Ever Looks Up. The Barnacle is naturally hidden by simple nature of it's positioning. By default, it requires a DC 13 Perception Check to spot the Barnacle's main body, though the DC is increased by 2 for every 10 feet higher the Barnacle is above the creature making the check.

Look, Ropes! In darkness or dim light, the Barnacle's tongue resembles a hanging rope or chain, or is sometimes hard to spot at all. In dim light or darkness, it requires a DC 15 Perception Check to recognize a Barnacle's tongue for what it is. Darkvision reduces the DC to 12.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target that the Barnacle has grabbed and reeled up to it's location. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 5) piercing damage.

Bonus Actions

Reel. After grabbing a target with it's tongue, the Barnacle will begin to pull it upward at a speed of 10 feet per turn.

Reactions

Grab. When a creature or moving object comes within 5 feet of the Barnacle's tongue, the Barnacle will attempt to grab it. If the target is an inanimate object, the Barnacle automatically succeeds. If the target is a creature, it can attempt a DC 15 STR or DEX saving throw to escape immediately. This save cannot be repeated if failed, but if the Barnacle dies, it automatically lets go. The tongue can also be severed with 5 points of slashing damage, which does not carry over to the Barnacle's main body. The tongue has an AC of 4. If the target is successfully grabbed, roll a d8. On a 6 or higher, the Barnacle has managed to grab the target around the throat, preventing them from breathing if they require air. Once the target is grabbed, the Barnacle can begin Reeling them.

Description

Some of the more commonplace creatures from Xen, a Barnacle is a stationary ambush predator. It clings to a ceiling through use of suction and adhesive slime, and employs the laziest hunting strategy in the all the realms: it hangs a long tongue, straight down, and simply waits for something to walk into the tongue, at which point the Barnacle will grab it and pull it up to eat. Barnacles aren't especially dangerous to intelligent creatures, but they can be a harsh reminder to watch your step. "Baiting" Barnacles by feeding them inanimate objects, or better yet, explosives, is an easy way to bypass the mild inconvenience they pose.
