Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Stormcrest Dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Stormborne Presence. The Stormcrest Dragon can walk on clouds and shape them as solid terrain. It ignores strong winds and difficult terrain caused by storm effects.

Conductive Form. Any creature that hits the dragon with a melee attack within 5 feet takes (3d6) lightning damage.

Cloudshaper’s Will. As a bonus action, the dragon can summon storm clouds in a 1-mile radius, causing heavy rain, winds, and random lightning strikes (see Stormcall). This weather lasts for 1 hour unless dismissed.

Actions

Multiattack. The Stormcrest Dragon makes three attacks: one Lightning Claw, one Thunderous Bite and if active a targeted Stormcall for half damage (halved again if saving throw is succeeded). If Stormcall is not active then the Stormcrest will do two Lightning Claw attacks and one Thunderous Bite attack instead.

Lightning Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: (+14), reach 15 ft., one target.
Hit: (4d8+10) slashing damage plus (4d6) lightning damage. The target must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Thunderous Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: (+14), reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: (4d10+10) piercing damage plus (5d6) thunder damage. On a failed DC 22 Constitution saving throw, the target is deafened for 1 minute.

Storm Crash (Recharge 5-6). The Stormcrest Dragon slams the ground or flaps its wings, releasing a shockwave. Each creature within 60 feet must make a DC 22 Strength saving throw or be pushed 30 feet away and knocked prone. Structures and unsecured objects take (10d10) thunder damage.

Stormcall (Recharge 6). The dragon summons a massive lightning storm over a 1-mile radius. Every round for 1 minute, a lightning bolt strikes a random hostile creature within the area for (7d10) lightning damage (DC 22 Dex save for half). The dragon can also direct a strike at will as a legendary action.

Reactions

Catch the Rider. If a creature falls from the dragon, the Stormcrest Dragon may use its reaction to attempt to catch them. The dragon makes a DC 22 Dexterity save. On a success, the dragon swoops beneath them, preventing the fall and setting them safely on its back.

Protect an Ally. If the dragon is within 5 ft of an ally, it can choose to block any incoming attack as a reaction. The dragon must do this before the 'to hit' roll and cannot avoid any attack it choses to block. The dragon will always take full damage.

Legendary Actions

(3/Turn)

Gale Step (1 action). The Stormcrest Dragon moves up to 60 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Charged Strike (2 actions). The dragon imbues its next attack with (8d6) extra lightning damage. On a failed DC 22 Constitution save, the target is paralyzed until the end of their next turn.

Cyclone Surge (3 actions, Recharge 5-6). A 100-ft radius whirlwind surrounds the dragon. All creatures within range must make a DC 22 Strength save or be flung 30 feet into the air and take (8d6) bludgeoning damage upon landing.

Mythic Actions

Mythic Trait: Eye of the Storm

When the Stormcrest Dragon drops below 210 HP, it releases its entire remaining storm energy, creating a cataclysmic Stormcall that transforms the battlefield into a maelstrom of lightning and wind. The air fills with whipping gales, crackling electricity, and deafening thunder, making movement treacherous and visibility beyond 60 feet heavily obscured.

  • Unleashed Stormcall: The area within 1 mile is struck by continuous lightning, with one guaranteed bolt striking a hostile creature at the start of each round.
  • Bonus Action - Targeted Strike: The Stormcrest Dragon can automatically direct a Stormcall lightning strike at a designated target as a bonus action, forcing the target to make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw or take (7d10) lightning damage (half on a success).
  • Stormfield Effect: Any creature that ends its turn flying in the area must make a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be violently thrown 30 feet in a random direction by powerful winds.
  • Enhanced Attacks: All of the dragon's attacks deal extra (4d8) lightning damage.
  • Conductive Body: Any creature that touches or strikes the dragon with a melee attack takes (3d6) lightning damage.

At the end of this state, the dragon loses all remaining lightning energy and becomes unable to use Conductive Form or Stormcall until it recharges from an external lightning source.

Description

Ancient Stormcrest Dragon – Monster Characteristics Description

Name: Ancient Stormcrest Dragon
Classification: Celestial Dragon, Apex Stormbringer
Habitat: The Skies Above, Tempest Haven, Floating Stormfronts
Behavior: Noble, Omnipotent, Guardian of the Storm
Threat Level: Divine

Physical Description

An Ancient Stormcrest Dragon is no longer simply a creature of the skies—it is the storm. It has reached the pinnacle of its existence, its presence commanding the winds, the lightning, and the very essence of the heavens. While it still retains its physical draconic form, the skies bend and shift at its every thought, responding to its emotions and will.

  • Size & Presence: Its form has grown massive, yet impossibly agile, towering over even the mightiest of dragons while moving with the effortless grace of the wind itself. Its wings, vast and luminous with stormlight, seem almost too large for the sky itself.
  • Scales & Patterns: Its storm-cloud-colored scales have deepened in richness, swirling with crackling energy, as if the very heavens have embedded themselves within its form. The lightning-bolt patterns along its body now pulse with celestial power, glowing brighter with every breath it takes.
  • Eyes & Gaze: Its electric blue eyes have evolved beyond mere sight, becoming gateways to the storm, reflecting the ever-shifting skies within them. When enraged, they flash with the intensity of the heavens, capable of cowing even the bravest of creatures with a single glare.
  • Fur & Conductivity: The soft, cloud-like fur along its back has taken on a shimmering, ethereal quality, acting as a conduit for its overwhelming power. When fully charged, its mane crackles with arcs of lightning, trailing sparks in its wake as it moves.

The Ancient Stormcrest Dragon is no longer bound by the limitations of ordinary dragons—it has ascended to become a force of nature itself.

Magical Affinity & Abilities

At this stage, the Ancient Stormcrest Dragon does not merely wield lightning—it is lightning. The skies move with it, responding to its emotions in ways that defy mortal comprehension.

  1. The Storm is One with It – Wherever it flies, the storm follows, lingering long after it departs, as if the very heavens remember its presence. Thunder rumbles in sync with its heartbeat, and lightning arcs at the twitch of its claws.
  2. Unchained Stormcall – No longer requiring effort, Stormcall is no longer an ability—it is an inevitability. The Ancient Stormcrest Dragon can call forth lightning with but a thought, striking down those who dare challenge its dominion.
  3. Cloudshaper’s Dominion – What was once mere manipulation of clouds has become absolute mastery. It can form solid structures within the sky, creating floating citadels of storm and shadow where only the worthy may tread.
  4. Conductive Form Ascended – The air around its body hums with barely contained energy. The closer one gets, the more the electric charge in the air becomes unbearable, causing metal to crackle and weapons to glow with static before they even strike.
  5. Lightning Knows its Master – Unlike lesser lightning, which follows the chaotic laws of nature, the Ancient Stormcrest Dragon’s bolts bend and weave unnaturally, refusing to strike those it considers allies while hunting down its foes with eerie precision.

Temperament & Behavior

  • The Will of the Heavens: The Ancient Stormcrest Dragon is no longer just a creature—it is a celestial force of judgment. It does not act out of impulse, nor does it take sides in mortal conflicts lightly. Instead, it moves according to a greater balance, ensuring that those who would abuse power are reminded of nature’s wrath.
  • The Noble Guardian: Unlike many other dragons, an Ancient Stormcrest does not hoard gold or jewels—it collects knowledge, power, and wisdom, safeguarding the skies themselves as if they were its sacred domain.
  • The Last Judge: Though wise, it is not merciful to those who defy the natural order. It has no patience for tyranny, greed, or those who manipulate storms for selfish gain. The heavens have no place for the foolish or the cruel, and the Stormcrest ensures they never take root in the skies again.

Weaknesses & Vulnerabilities

  1. Bound to the Storm – Though its power is immense, it relies on the energy of the skies. If completely drained of lightning, the Ancient Stormcrest Dragon enters a dormant state, unable to fight until recharged by the natural world.
  2. Divine Pride – It rarely retreats, even when it should. The thought of abandoning the sky to another is an insult beyond words to a being of its power.
  3. The Cost of Power – If it releases too much energy in battle, it temporarily burns out its own storm, rendering itself vulnerable for a brief moment before it can replenish its strength.
