Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Stormcrest Dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Stormborne Presence. The Stormcrest Dragon can walk on clouds and shape them as solid terrain. It ignores strong winds and difficult terrain caused by storm effects.

Conductive Form. Any creature that hits the dragon with a melee attack within 5 feet takes (3d6) lightning damage.

Cloudshaper’s Will. As a bonus action, the dragon can summon storm clouds in a ½-mile radius, causing heavy rain, winds, and random lightning strikes (see Stormcall). This weather lasts for 30 minutes unless dismissed.

Actions

Multiattack. The Stormcrest Dragon makes two attacks: one Lightning Claw and one Thunderous Bite.

Lightning Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: (+11), reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: (3d8+7) slashing damage plus (3d6) lightning damage. The target must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be stunned until the end of its next turn.

Thunderous Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: (+11), reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: (3d10+7) piercing damage plus (4d6) thunder damage. On a failed DC 15 Constitution save, the target is deafened for 1 minute.

Storm Crash (Recharge 5-6). The Stormcrest Dragon slams the ground or flaps its wings, releasing a shockwave. Each creature within 30 feet must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and pushed 20 feet away. Structures and unsecured objects take (8d10) thunder damage.

Stormcall (Recharge 6). The dragon summons a massive lightning storm over a ½-mile radius. Every round for 1 minute, a lightning bolt strikes a random hostile creature within the area for (6d8) lightning damage (DC 15 Dex save for half). The dragon can also direct a strike at will as a legendary action.

Reactions

Catch the Rider. If a creature falls from the dragon, the Stormcrest Dragon may use its reaction to attempt to catch them. The dragon makes a DC 15 Dexterity save. On a success, the dragon swoops beneath them, preventing the fall and setting them safely on its back.

Protect an Ally. If the dragon is within 5 ft of an ally, it can choose to block any incoming attack as a reaction. The dragon must do this before the 'to hit' roll and cannot avoid any attack it choses to block. The dragon will always take full damage.

Legendary Actions

(3/Turn)

Gale Step (1 action). The Stormcrest Dragon moves up to 50 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Charged Strike (2 actions). The dragon imbues its next attack with (6d6) extra lightning damage. On a failed DC 15 Constitution save, the target is paralyzed until the end of their next turn.

Cyclone Surge (3 actions, (Recharge 5-6)). A 60-ft radius whirlwind surrounds the dragon. All creatures within range must make a DC 15 Strength save or be flung 20 feet into the air and take (6d6) bludgeoning damage upon landing and are knocked prone.

Mythic Actions

Mythic Trait: Eye of the Storm (Unlocks at Half HP)

When the Stormcrest Dragon drops below 140 HP, it releases its entire remaining storm energy, creating a powerful Stormcall that becomes a maelstrom of lightning and wind, turning the terrain into a storm-wracked warzone. This state is maintained for thirty seconds.

  • All attacks deal extra (4d8) lightning damage.
  • Any creature that touches the dragon takes (3d6) lightning damage.
  • At the start of its turn, it automatically can direct the Stormcall Lightning at a designated target as a bonus action.
  • At the end of this state, the dragon loses all remaining lightning energy and becomes prone and is unable to get up until it receives an outside lightning source.

Description

Stormcrest Dragon – Monster Characteristics Description

Name: Stormcrest Dragon
Classification: Celestial Dragon
Habitat: Tempest Haven, Stormy Skies, High Altitudes
Behavior: Noble, Selective, Territorial
Threat Level: Cataclysmic

Physical Description

The Stormcrest Dragon is a majestic and awe-inspiring creature, its sleek body built for agility and aerial dominance. Unlike bulkier dragon species, it possesses a thin, elongated frame, allowing it to weave through even the fiercest of storms with uncanny precision.

  • Scales: Their shimmering scales shift in color like storm clouds, ranging from soft white to deep thunderous grays.
  • Eyes: Piercing, glowing hues of electric blue, silver, violet, or stormy yellow, intensifying when charged with energy.
  • Fur & Markings: A unique mane of cloud-like fur runs down their neck, back, and tail, standing on end when surging with power. Their bodies are lined with lightning-bolt-shaped bioluminescent markings, glowing with an eerie brilliance based on their energy reserves.
  • Claws & Fangs: Composed of metallic, conductive material, their claws and fangs are stronger than steel and naturally arc with lightning when striking.

Despite their imposing height—often standing taller than other dragons—their weight remains deceptively light due to their affinity for the skies.

Magical Affinity & Abilities

Stormcrest Dragons are deeply tied to the essence of storms, wielding lightning and wind magic with unmatched precision.

  1. Conductive Biology – They absorb electricity directly from storm clouds, using it as sustenance instead of traditional food.
  2. Cloudstrider – They can walk upon and shape clouds as solid surfaces, crafting floating sanctuaries in the sky.
  3. Thunderous Breath – Unlike traditional fire-breathing dragons, they unleash high-voltage lightning bolts, incinerating targets instantly.
  4. Stormcall – With a single roar, they can summon storms, causing torrential rains, fierce winds, and chain lightning strikes over miles.
  5. Eye of the Tempest – When heavily wounded, they enter a mythic storm state, becoming a living conduit of raw celestial energy.

Temperament & Behavior

  • Noble & Selective: Unlike other dragons that bond with any worthy warrior, Stormcrest Dragons are highly selective when choosing a Dragonkin. They value intelligence, honor, and resilience, refusing to bond with the reckless or power-hungry. Though a Stormcrest Dragon who has become corrupted will not follow these values.
  • Solitary Yet Watchful: These dragons prefer to observe rather than interfere, only stepping in when grave injustices occur. However, once they act, their presence is unmistakable and terrifying.
  • Guardians of the Skies: They view the air and heavens as their domain, despising those who seek to control or disrupt natural weather patterns for personal gain.

Weaknesses & Vulnerabilities

  1. Water as a Bane – When touching large bodies of water, they become stunned and weakened, as water siphons their electrical charge.
  2. Energy Dependency – If they fully expend their stored lightning, they become helpless, unable to fly or defend themselves, dying within 24 hours unless recharged.

Final Words

A Stormcrest Dragon is not merely a beast—it is a force of nature, a living embodiment of the storm’s fury and the sky’s will. To face one unprepared is suicidal. To earn its respect is legendary.
