Traits

Deceptive Carapace. At will, the Bijou can shift the colors of the gemstones embedded in it to blend in with the environment. When making a stealth check, the bijou gains an additional +2 to the roll.

Body of Stone. The Bijou has resistance to non-magical damage.

Imperfection. The eye of a Bijou is their most vulnerable point. An adventurer with a keen eye will see how the beast moves to protect it at all times. Although hardened against non-magical damage, any injury here is devastating. The eye has 2d6 hit points, and vulnerability to all damage. Upon shattering, the Bijou is permanently blinded, and the stone on its body loses its rigidity and no longer benefits from resistance to non-magical damage. However, to hit the eye, a creature must roll at least two points above the Bijou’s current armor class.

Actions

Multiattack. The Bijou makes two attacks, a combination of Claw and beam.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., 1 target. Hit:  6 (1d8 + 2) slashing damage.

Beam. The Bijou releases a short burst of light from one of its gems. Ranged Attack: +7 to hit, range 60ft., 1 target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) radiant damage.

Resplendent Ray. (recharge 5-6). The Bijou releases a singular directional ray of light from the gem in its eye. It loses this ability when it has shattered. Ranged Attack: +6 to hit, range 60ft., 5ft. line. Hit: 7 (1d10 + 1) radiant damage.

Brilliant Death (recharge 5-6). The Bijou releases a plethora of rays of light from the gems on its back, scorching whatever it touches. Ranged Attack:  Dexterity saving throw DC 17, range 30ft., 3 target. Hit: 8 (1d10 + 2) radiant damage.

Description

The Bijou is canine in appearance, with an elongated snout and body made of cold hard stone. It has a singular eye, a cavity in its face filled with a gem. They oft stalk gemstone mines, although despite their wolf-like appearance, they do not work in teams. Bijou are solitary and territorial, concerned only with heightening their own strength, often claiming a mine as their own. As a Bijou matures, it uses its acute, almost mystical sense of smell to discover precious gems hidden under the surface. Upon consumption, the gem merges itself with the creature’s hide, becoming yet another layer of defense, concentrating on their back and tail. Bijou are also able to use these gems in a special, primal sort of magic. Many will use them to create and condense light, sending it out of their bodies in a brilliant, but terrifying display of power. The more gems a Bijou consumes, the greater the terror of the poor souls who finds it.

Bijou are created by the earth itself under rare conditions, their hearts composed of a singular, often very valuable gem. However, they do wander from the darkness below from time to time. Their sense of smell is so great, some magicians have claimed they have left their abodes from over 100 miles away to ransack their wares. However, should you attempt to regain them by killing the beast, they will disintegrate along with its carcass in a matter of minutes. The only way, it is said, to claim a gem from the creature is to pry it from its stone body while it is alive. A near impossible task. However, being an ambush predator, you may find more luck in turning the tables on its habits.
