Description
A jealous, spiteful creature, Allaren was once a beautiful maiden, and the daughter of a rich trade merchant. Beautiful and fair, she was to be wed to nobleman's son, and she eagerly awaited the life of luxury and decadence that awaited her. However, after being betrayed by her betrothed and thrown into the raging sea, her anger and hatred caught the attention of a powerful fey, who transformed her as she succumbed to the watery depths. Now she exists to unleash the same suffering she endured after her betrothed betrayal, upon both unsuspecting men and women alike.
Drowned Temptress. Having retained her beauty after her death and rebirth, Allaren vainly seeks out the approval of attractive or powerful men, luring them to a watery grave. Blessed with the ability to innately sense the person or object of a person's desire, Allaren's magic causes her victims to see what they most desire. To a lustful man, she might appear as a wily vixen of the night, while she also appear as a woeful maiden in need of saving to a righteous paladin. She secretly hopes to find her treacherous beloved, both to sentence him to the same fate as he did her, but also to finally have him for herself forevermore.
Envious Spirit. Having been betrayed by one she loved for the sake of another, Allaren holds a particular distaste for those who are deeply in love. It stokes the flames of jealousy within her bosom, causing her to such people the unfortunate focal point of her ire. When given the chance, Allaren will beckon a pair (or group) of lovers to her lair, before dragging all but one down to their graves, leaving the lone survivor haunted by the violent loss of their beloved(s). Allaren revels in the pain caused by her cruelty, and takes pride in reducing once-happy people to sorrowful husks of their former selves.
Greedy to a Fault. In life, Allaren placed heavy emphasis on status and wealth, and so to in her new life does she do the same. She has a notable preference for turning the nobles and otherwise upper-class citizens into her victims, before plucking their gold and jewels off their bones, half buried in the sand. Some legends say that Allaren has called entire merchant vessels to their doom before, leaving only the wreckage behind for those brave enough to venture beneath her waves.
Lair and Lair Actions
Allaren's Lair:
Allaren likes to make her lair wherever there are dangerous waters when she manifests on the Material Plane, to which she can lure men to their untimely demises. This could be the water at the base of a sheer cliff, a dangerous cove filled with deadly reefs to damage sailors' ships, or a windy underwater cave network. Regardless of the manner of her lair, the surrounding area takes on the following characteristics:
Controlled Tides. While in her lair, the water around Allaren becomes Difficult Terrain, and she can use her Watery Grasp ability as a bonus action.
Frigid Water. While within 1 mile of Allaren's lair, all bodies of water become frigid. Any creature that isn't adapted to cold water environments, or otherwise does not have resistance to Cold damage, will find its strength sapped away from it while within the frigid depths. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 12, after spending one minute within the cold water. Failure: The creature suffers one level of exhaustion. They repeat the saving throw after each subsequent minute spent in the water without adequate protection.
