Traits

Magic Resistance.

The Lesser Archivist has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Aura of Whispering Madness.

Any creature that starts its turn within 20 feet of the Archivist must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or hear maddening whispers. On a failed save, the creature is frightened of the Archivist until the start of its next turn.

Multiattack.

The Lesser Archivist makes two attacks: one with Maw of Terror and one with Shadow Claw.

  • Before Combat: The Archivist prefers to manipulate its surroundings before attacking. It will use Minor Illusion to create eerie sounds—rustling pages, hushed whispers, or distant footsteps. It may use Phantasmal Force to make an enemy believe the bookshelves are closing in on them.
  • During Combat: It begins with Screech of the Damned, disorienting its foes before moving in with Maw of Terror and Shadow Claw. It stays airborne if possible, avoiding melee-heavy enemies while using spells like Fear to scatter its foes.
  • Weaknesses: The Archivist relies heavily on psychic and necrotic attacks, making radiant damage and mind-resisting abilities (like Protection from Evil and Good) highly effective against it.
  • When Weakened: If reduced below 30 HP, it will attempt to flee into the shadows, leaving behind whispers of vengeance that linger long after its departure.
Actions

Maw of Terror. (Recharge 5–6)

Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) psychic damage. The target must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. The target can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns.

Shadow Claw.

Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) necrotic damage, and the target’s Strength or Dexterity (Archivist’s choice) is reduced by 1d4. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest. If a creature’s Strength or Dexterity reaches 0, they fall unconscious for 1 hour.

Screech of the Damned. (Recharge 5–6)

The Archivist lets out a horrifying screech. All creatures within 30 feet must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, they take 27 (6d8) thunder damage and are deafened for 1 minute. On a success, they take half damage and are not deafened.

Spellcasting (Psionics).

The Archivist is a 6th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). It can cast the following spells without requiring components:

At will: Mage Hand, Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation
3/day each: Fear, Phantasmal Force, Hold Person
1/day: Confusion

Multiattack.

The Lesser Archivist makes two attacks: one with Maw of Terror and one with Shadow Claw.

Description

The Lesser Archivist is a horrifying fusion of eldritch energy and decayed knowledge. Its body is a swirling mass of parchment-thin flesh, ink-black tendrils, and jagged bone spires that resemble the spines of cursed tomes. Its gaping maw stretches impossibly wide, filled with needle-like teeth that seem to whisper the names of the lost. The Archivist’s many bloodshot eyes dart wildly, each one fixating on knowledge seekers with an unnatural, piercing gaze. It moves in erratic, floating lurches, its limbs twisting as if not fully bound by reality.

The Lesser Archivist is not a mindless horror; it is a tormented librarian of forbidden knowledge, cursed to guard the books it once treasured. It despises ignorance but delights in suffering, reveling in the fear and madness it instills in intruders. It enjoys toying with victims, whispering secrets that drive them to paranoia and despair. However, it respects those who demonstrate true intellect and may even spare them if they offer knowledge it does not already possess.

"Knowledge is power... but too much knowledge can unmake the mind."

Lair Actions

On initiative count 10, the Lesser Archivist takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the Lesser Archivist can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Books of Madness: Spectral books fly off the shelves, forcing creatures to make a Wisdom save or be frightened.
  • Shifting Corridors: The layout of the library shifts, creating a confusing maze effect.

Habitat: Urban
