Amorphous. The aballin can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
Aquatic Attributes. When in combat, the aballin has disadvantage on all saving throws against spells that affect water. However, while the aballin remains motionless, it cannot be harmed by any attack or spell that would not affect a normal pool of water.
False Appearance. While the aballin remains motionless, it is indistinguishable from a puddle of water.
Multiattack. The aballin makes one Pseudopod attack and uses Drown.
Pseudopod. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Bludgeoning damage plus 14 (3d8) Acid damage, and the target is Grappled.
Drown. Strength Saving Throw: DC 13, one target Grappled by the aballin. Failure: The aballin draws the victim into its fluid body. The victim is Restrained, and can choose to hold their breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + their Constitution modifier. A trapped victim can still attack the aballin or attempt to escape the grapple, but cannot cast spells with a verbal component or use any other item or ability that requires speech.
If the victim makes an attack against the aballin or attempts to escape the grapple, they must succeed a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or lose 1 minute of time to hold their breath. Once the number of rounds the victim can hold their breath has passed, they are Stunned for a number of rounds equal to their Constitution modifier. Once that number of rounds has passed, they fall to 0 hit points.
If the creature successfully escapes the grapple, it is deposited in a space 5 feet from the aballin. If another creature hits with a slashing or piercing weapon against the aballin while it is grappling a victim, roll a 1d4. On a 1, the attack hits the grappled victim instead, who takes the full damage, and the aballin is unharmed by the attack.
The aballin can only have one creature grappled at a time, and must release the other creature to use this action again.
Success: The target is pushed 5 feet away from the aballin into an unoccupied space. If there is no unoccupied space within 5 feet, the creature fails this saving throw.
Description
While at first glance it resembles a pool of water or, if active, a small water elemental, an aballin's "body" actually comprises a weak acid. As it kills more creatures, it accumulates more and more indigestible metal items such as coins, buckles, or other effects, butis otherwise completely invisible in water. On land, it moves laboriously, similar to a slug, and is unable to climb hills owing to its semiliquid body. This animated liquid entraps and drowns any creatures it catches within its reach, passively laying in wait in standing water, such as natural pools, subterranean lakes, and even fountains, until it attacks when it senses prey nearby.
