Traits

Exceptional Vision and Smell. The vulture has a +10 bonus to Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight or smell.

Flyby. The vulture doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks when they fly out of an enemy’s reach.

Actions

Beak. Melee Attack Roll: +2, reach 5 ft. Hit: 2 (1d4) Piercing damage.

Talons. Melee Attack Roll: +2, reach 5 ft. Hit: 3 (1d6) Slashing damage, and if the target is a Tiny creature, it is Grappled (escape DC 10). If the target is a Small or larger creature, the bird instead attaches to it. While attached, the bird’s Beak attacks against that target are made with advantage, and the bird can’t attack another target. The target or a creature who can reach it can attempt to detach the bird as an Action by making a DC 10 Strength (Athletics) check. On a failed check, the target takes 2 (1d4) Slashing damage. On a successful check, the attached target takes 2 (1d4) Slashing damage and the bird is no longer attached. The bird can detach by spending 5 feet of its movement.

Call for Help (1/Day). The hatchling makes a whistling sound through its underdeveloped sac, which can only be heard by dogs, bog vultures, and other creatures with exceptional hearing. If a bog vulture nest is within 1 mile, the hatchling summons 1d6 bog vultures, which arrive in 1d10 rounds.

Bonus Actions

Spot. The bird makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Description

With the head of a vulture and wings of a hawk, the bog vulture is an apex predator. Their throats bulge with a sac of purulent bile that they expel to externally begin digestion of their prey. With wingspans ranging up to 15 feet, they can carry Small prey back to their nests, and have even been known to try to pick up Medium creatures.

Bog vulture hunting packs are usually composed of 3-4 members, and they often start hunting by regurgitating bile on their victims and then flying out of reach of retaliation. The diseased bile renders targets sick enough for the hunting pack to observe and attack their prey again after the prey is sufficiently weakened.
