Traits

Keen Smell. The platypusbear has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Hold Breath. The platypusbear can hold its breath for 2 hours.

Green Glow. Under magical light sources, the platypusbear's fur glows green.

Cabbage Fury. If the platypusbear is within 60 feet of cabbage or eats a cabbage, it will enter a great fury for 1 minute, during which it gains resistance to all damage types except for psychic damage, gains an additional +4 to attack rolls, it rolls an extra (3d4) fire damage for every melee attack it makes and gains access to legendary resistance, smoldering fur, fire absorption, and fire breath.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). (Only Works If Cabbage Fury Is Active). If the platypusbear fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Smoldering Fur. (Only Works If Cabbage Fury Is Active). A creature that touches the platypusbear or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet of it takes 6 (3d4) fire damage.

Fire Absorption. (Only Works If Cabbage Fury Is Active). Whenever the platypusbear is subjected to fire damage, it takes no damage and instead regains a number of hit points equal to the fire damage dealt.

Actions

Multiattack. The platypusbear makes three attacks: one with its bill and two with its claws. One of these attacks can be replaced with a tail attack.

Bill. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 6) piercing damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 6) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be stunned until the start of the platypusbear's next turn.

Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). (Only Works When Cabbage Is Activate). The platypusbear exhales blue flames in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking 24 (7d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Description

To anyone who may stumble upon this or creatures like this: This is a homebrew creature I made for my homebrew campaign setting and was never originally supposed to be made public. However, I decided to use a homebrew race from that same setting in my friend's Spelljammer campaign, and they requested to use some creatures I was okay with them using from that campaign setting in case we visit the planet or run into some intergalactic poaching ring. However, after a bit, we were made aware that even though I was in their campaign, D&D Beyond did not give them access to my homebrew creatures, so I am releasing duplicated copies of these creatures for them to use and keeping the originals so I can continue to update them as I see fit. So if anything seems janky, that's why.

A Platypusbear is seemingly the hybridization of a bear and a platypus, similar to how an owlbear is a hybrid of a giant owl and a bear. Speaking of similarities the platypusbear and the owlbear share, they both lay eggs and are unusually aggressive and territorial. They are both able to be tamed and trained. Their behavior is so similar that the two species have been observed sharing territories… however these are some of the most aggressive and territorial creatures known, so when one too many boundaries get pushed, one of these "territory sharers" will end up leaving the other a bloody corpse.

Remarkable Eyes and Senses. It is well known that platypuses hunt through electroreception and have eyes that can see spectrums of light the human eye can't; Platypusbears take this to the next level. Platypusbear's electroreception is excellent enough to track something for miles, and if a platypusbear is blinded, its electroreception gives it a form of blindsight, allowing it to keep fighting unhindered. Platypusbears have also developed truesight, allowing them to see invisible creatures and see through illusions.

Appetite. Platypusbears are omnivores. Meat, fish, shellfish, and insects mostly. Sometimes honey, but most shocking, platypusbears have a strange obsession with cabbages. A platypusbear will recklessly risk its life for cabbage. Farmers that grow cabbages live in constant fear of platypusbears. People who survived such rampages say the beaver-tailed menace's eyes glowed, and an odd magical effect spelled across its fur. The nature of these magical effects seems to differ between the multiple subspecies of the platypusbear. Many have died in a duck-billed bear's pursuit of a common vegetable.

Platypusbear Species. The Platypusbear has three subspecies. There is the common brown platypusbear. This is the species most associated with the name platypusbear. The brown platypusbear is found all across the Bone Barrow in various swamps and forests. When introduced to cabbage, the brown platypusbear's eyes glow orange, and its fur bristles as sparks of orange electricity spell across its body.

Then there are the rarer specimens known as the white platypusbear and the black platypus.

Black platypusbears are known to appear in many of the same areas as brown platypusbears; however, they are rare in these areas. To find black platypusbears more commonly, one has to search in areas commonly associated with fire, such as Finger Tip Island. The black platypusbear is known to swim in pools of lava like they are pools of water. Unlike its other billed bear brethren, the black platypusbear doesn't have poisonous burs on its elbows; the reason for this difference is unknown. When introduced to cabbage, the black platypusbear eyes glow blue, blue flames billow from its chest fur and smoke, and small embers begin to plum from the rest of its body.

The white platypusbear can typically be found in the frozen south of the Bone Barrow and other arctic and snowy areas. The white platypusbear is the largest and most aggressive of the platypusbear species. When introduced to cabbage, the white platypusbear's eyes blacken, and large black icicles form on its fur, making the great white beast look like it has quills like a porcupine.

While the places mentioned above are the natural habitats of the numerous versions of the duck-billed bear, platypusbears are known to be quite adventurous and have a tendency to appear in the most bizarre places, so be careful when adventuring because you never know when a platypusbear may appear.

Home and Young. Like platypus, platypusbears dig burrows alongside freshwater sources. In these caves, platypusbears lay their eggs and raise their young pugglecubs. Mother platypusbears secrete milk from their pores. The pugglecubs suck the milk from the mother's fur tuffs. The pugglecubs will stay with their mother until they can fend for themselves.
