Traits

Feral Rejection. The Bitter Grinroot is a failed offspring, rejected by its parent. It is always hostile, attacking without hesitation, even against larger threats.

Tethered to Nothing. Unlike other Grinroots, the Bitter Grinroot has no bush to anchor itself to. However, it still has a 10-foot vine leash, which it thrashes and whips around wildly as it moves.

Born in a Shattered Husk. When a Bitter Vitamelon from an Overripe Grinroot bursts, roll a d6.

  • On a 6, a Bitter Grinroot emerges, screeching and attacking immediately.
  • The creature acts on the next available initiative count, prioritizing the first living creature it sees.

Vitaforce Combustion. If killed with fire damage, the Bitter Grinroot erupts in a surge of green flame, destroying all nearby plants, fruits, and Grinroot remnants.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 7 (1d10 + 2) piercing damage.

Leaping Strike. The Bitter Grinroot launches itself forward at terrifying speed.

  • It hops up to 15 feet in any direction and makes a Bite attack with advantage.
  • If it hits, the target must make a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Death Thrash. (Recharges when reduced below half HP.)

  • When critically wounded, the Bitter Grinroot lashes out wildly, making a Bite attack against every creature within 5 feet.

Description

A wretched creature, forever abandoned, the Bitter Grinroot is a ghost of what it was meant to be.

It is small, ghost-white, and malformed, its hardened vine trailing behind it like a shriveled umbilical cord. Unlike its tethered kin, it has nowhere to hide, no home to protect, no purpose but to lash out at the world.

Where the rooted Grinroots remain silent, the Bitter Grinroot bleats and wails in an unsettling, plantlike mimicry of pain—an aberrant noise that should not exist. It reeks of acid and is blind with instinctive aggression, lashing out at anything that moves.
