Traits

Rooted in Hatred. Although no longer bound to a bush, Blightgrin's mass of uprooted roots trails behind it, dragging a tangle of rotting vines and acidic vitamelons. These react independently, lashing out at creatures that get too close.

Vitamelon Arsenal. Blightgrin hoards a small number of acidic vitamelons, chucking them as living grenades. These melons, rotted with mold, burst on impact.

Griefstricken Legion. At the start of combat, 2d4 Bitter Grinroots emerge from its tangled roots, screeching and attacking any living thing that isn't Blightgrin.

Vitaforce Combustion. If killed with fire damage, Blightgrin explodes in green flame, dealing 6d6 fire damage in a 20-ft radius and destroying all nearby plants and vitamelons. If killed with cold, it remains intact for harvesting or study.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 19 (3d8 + 5) piercing damage. If the target is restrained by the Thorned Roots, they take an additional 2d6 acid damage.

Thorned Root Whip. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (3d6 + 5) slashing damage, and the target must make a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be grappled and restrained until the end of Blightgrin's next turn.

Hurl Rotten Vitamelon. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target.
Hit: 16 (3d8) acid damage, plus a burst effect (roll 1d6):

  • 1-3: Acidic Spores: 4d6 acid damage in a 5-foot radius.
  • 4-5: Noxious Gas: Creatures in a 10-ft radius must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute (repeat save at end of turn).
  • 6: Bitter Grinroot Husk: A Bitter Grinroot emerges, screeching and attacking immediately.

Bounding Pounce. Recharge 5-6.
Blightgrin leaps up to 40 feet in a single bound, crushing an area. Creatures within 10 feet must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 20 (4d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone.

Bonus Actions

Crush the Bitter. (Recharge 5-6.)
Blightgrin tramples a Bitter Grinroot within 5 feet, instantly destroying it. If it does, Blightgrin gains 10 temporary hit points.

Legendary Actions

1️⃣ Lash of Envy. Costs 1 action. Blightgrin whips a target within 20 feet, making a Thorned Root Whip attack against them.

2️⃣ Crushing Hop. Costs 2 actions. Blightgrin hops up to 20 feet without provoking opportunity attacks and lands violently, dealing 1d8 bludgeoning damage to any creature within 5 feet.

3️⃣ Summon the Bitter. Costs 2 actions. A Bitter Grinroot claws its way free from Blightgrin's tangled roots, entering the battlefield.

Description

A fallen king of its kind, the Blightgrin is a rotting nightmare of sorrow, envy, and fungal corruption.

Once, it was proud. Once, it had a perfect vitamelon, and it lost it. Now, it is nothing but spite and ruin.

Its burgundy flesh is streaked with wide white mold splotches, the sentient rot that has taken hold of it, refusing to let it die. It drags the corpse of its own withered bush behind it, using its skeletal, gnarled vines as weapons.

Where it walks, the land dies. Its bitter, wailing offspring follow it like pilgrims to a god that will never acknowledge them. And always, it searches—for what it lost, for the thing it can never regain.
