Traits

Spider Climb. The matriarch can climb difficult surfaces, including along ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.

Web Walker. The matriarch ignores movement restrictions caused by webs, and it knows the location of any other creature in contact with the same web.

Legendary Resistance (3/Day, or 4/Day in Lair). If the matriarch fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Actions

Multiattack. The matriarch makes two Proboscis attacks.

Proboscis. Melee Attack Roll: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 11 (1d8 + 7) Piercing damage plus 14 (4d6) Necrotic damage. If the target is not a Construct, an Elemental, or a Plant, the matriarch regains hit points equal to half the Necrotic damage dealt. If this attack reduces the target to 0 hit points, the matriarch regains twice as many hit points as it otherwise would with this attack.

Bonus Actions

Barbed Web Strand. Ranged Attack Roll: +11 to hit, reach 120 ft., two targets. Hit: 7 (2d6) Piercing damage, and the target is Grappled (escape DC 18). The matriarch then pulls each creature Grappled by it up to 60 feet straight toward itself. The target takes damage again at the start of their turns until the Grappled condition ends.

The web strand can be attacked and destroyed (AC 12; 20 hit points; vulnerability to fire damage; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage). The spider can grapple up to six creatures at a time using its web strands.

Reactions

Hatch. Trigger: A hostile creature moves within 15 feet of the Matriarch. Response: The Matriarch summons a Swarm of Insects on the creature's space.

Legendary Actions

Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, the matriarch can expend a use to take one of the following actions. The matriarch regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.

Drink. The matriarch makes one Proboscis attack.

Web. The matriarch uses Barbed Web Strand targeting only one creature.

Strand Fling. If the matriarch has at least one creature Grappled, it can throw the creature up to 30 feet in any direction. The creature remains Grappled unless it moves more than 120 feet away from the Matriarch.

Description

Deep within the darkest forests and the forgotten reaches of the Underdark, the fearsome Bloodwidow spiders make their homes. Fiercely territorial, they mercilessly hunt down any foolish enough to trespass in their domains. Swapping typical mandibles for rapier-sharp proboscises, they use these like macabre straws to drink the blood from their victims.

Even their webs are specialized to inflict gruesome wounds. Hundreds of tiny, chitinous barbs tear into the flesh of those unfortunate enough to get caught in a Bloodwidow's web. Once the struggling blood-bag inside the webs has been drained, the Bloodwidows will spin the soaked webs into egg sacs, allowing their offspring enough to eat.

Bloodwidows also display a curious social structure atypical of spiders, living in hive states with a "queen", called a Matriarch, at the top.

Lair and Lair Actions

Bloodwidow matriarchs nest in dense, dark forests, or deep underground.

The region containing a Bloodwidow Matriarch's lair is infested by it, creating the following effects:

Hatchlings. Every hour while within 1 mile of the matriarch's lair, each creature other than any spider, Contruct, or Elemental must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 5 (2d4) piercing damage and gain one level of Exhaustion as Tiny Bloodwidow hatchlings constantly snack on their blood.

Blood Scent. The matriarch can detect the precise location of any creature with less than full hit points within 1 mile of its lair.

If the matriarch dies or moves its lair elsewhere, these effects end immediately.
