Traits

Encyclopaedic Knowledge. The Bestiary of Legends automatically succeeds on Intelligence (Nature) checks related to magical creatures, monsters, and their weaknesses with a DC of 15 or lower. It makes higher DC checks with advantage.

Weakness Revealer. As a bonus action, the tome can scan a creature within 30 feet. The tome reveals that creature’s resistances, immunities, and vulnerabilities to an ally of its choice within range, who has advantage on attack rolls or checks involving the discovered trait until the start of the tome’s next turn.

Guide to Beasts. The tome grants advantage to allies on Wisdom (Animal Handling) checks while it is within 30 feet.

Magical Binding. If the Bestiary of Legends is reduced to 0 hit points, it is not destroyed but becomes inert for 1 hour. After this period, it regains all its hit points and resumes floating.

Hovering Form. The tome cannot be knocked prone or restrained by non-magical means and can hover effortlessly.

Actions

Illusory Creature (Recharge 5-6). The tome projects a shimmering illusion of a fearsome monster from its pages. Each hostile creature within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. While frightened, creatures cannot move closer to the tome. An affected creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Spectral Vines. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 30 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (4d4 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or become restrained by ghostly vines until the end of its next turn.

Description

The Bestiary of Legends is a sentient, floating tome brimming with detailed knowledge of monsters, beasts, and magical creatures. Often found in the hands of adventurers or scholars, this living book serves as an invaluable guide in identifying creatures' traits and weaknesses, offering tactical advice during combat. When threatened, it conjures illusions of terrifying monsters from its pages or entangles enemies in spectral vines. Though peaceful by nature, the tome is always ready to aid those seeking to understand or overcome the creatures of the world.
