Description

Watchful forest is a monster that takes the appearance of trees of any forest it inhabits. How it comes to be is not well known as it usually goes unnoticed until it has infested a large chunk of the forest. Creatures within roughly 200 feet of an instance of watchful woods will feel like they are being observed.

They vary in looks, but 2 features always remain, a hole near the bottom of the tree big enough for a small creature to enter it and a patch of darkness located at the part branches grow out of, no matter how bright it is or how scarce the leaves on its branches are, the dark spot is a constant feature.

The trees themselves are unable to move or attack, only able to seal the hole in their trunk. They are just intelligent enough to imitate creatures or people in distress to lure in additional victims, once its pray has entered through the hole in the trunk the tree will seal it and start the process of consuming it. The exact process is unknown but nothing of the creature will remain. Upon consuming a creature with a degree of intelligence and self awareness, a new tree will shortly appear somewhere within the forest.

The trees can recognize when a creature doesn't fall for the trap and as a last ditch effort to frighten any intelligent creature the nearby trees will open their eye which is located in the dark patch between its branches and start mimicking deep laughter.

Why the watchful woods pray on living creatures is unknown as they are capable of sustaining themselves purely on photosynthesis.

To exterminate the watchful woods every instance of it needs to be destroyed, it is no easy task but the instances can be harvested like normal wood and they won't retain any of their unusual features.
