Heir of the Black Flame. Varas claims the power of fire for himself. Any creature within 30 ft of him has disadvantage on weapon and spell attacks that include fire damage. In addition, everytime a creature within 30 ft of him casts a spell that uses fire as its main damage type, Varas gains temporary hit points euqal to 5 plus the spell's level. These temporary hit points last until the start of his next turn.
Spellcasting. Varas' innate spellcasting ability is Chairsma (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). He can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
At will: Burning Hands
3/day: Heat Metal, Scorching Ray
2/day: Fireball
1/day: Flame Strike (replace the radiant damage with necrotic damage)
Multiattack. Varas makes two Flaming Bident attacks, one of which can be replaced by a Black Fire Bolt.
Flaming Bident. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., 1 target. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 8) magical piercing damage plus an additional 14 (4d6) fire damage.
Black Fire Bolt. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 80 ft., 1 target. Hit: 7 (2d6 ) fire damage plus an additional 7 (2d6) necrotic damage. Varas must be holding his Flaming Bident in order to be able to use this ability.
Curse of the Searing Black Flame (1/day). Varas chooses one creature within 60 ft of him that he can see. The creature must make a Dexterity Saving Throw (DC 15). On a fail, the target gets engulfed by black flames for one minute. At the start of each of its turns it takes 1d4 fire damage and 1d4 necrotic damage, which both increase by 1d4 every turn until the effect has ended (maximum of 10d4 each on turn 10 after it has been applied). The curse can be lifted via a cast of Remove Curse or Dispel Magic. It can also be lifted by dousing the creature in holy water (one flask will suffice). A creature can also take an action to repeat the Saving Throw to attempt to end the effect while it is fully submerged in water. While under the effect of this ability, the creature looses its vulnerability to fire if it has any, gains resistance to fire if it doesn't already have it (and isn't vulnerable to fire) or gains immunity to fire if it already has resistance. A creature that has already been affected by this ability once has advantage on any Saving Throws made to avoid or end it in the future.
Varas can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Varas regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
Flaming Bident (Costs 1 Actions). Varas makes a Flaming Bident attack.
Black Fire Bolt (Costs 1 Actions). Varas makes a Black Fire Bolt attack.
Teleport (Costs 3 Actions). Varas magically teleports to an unoccupied space within 120 ft of him that he can see.
Description
Varas rules over the land of Tagamaa with and iron fist. The region surrounds a slumbering volcano, which left the land feritle and ripe for agriculture. The people of the land have always been tending to it kindly, but once Varas and his small army of fire giants arrived, darkness soon fell over Tagamaa.
Now Varas and his man make the common folk work the land hard in order to keep themself alive. They are no better than slaves in many cases, completely at the hand of whatever lieutenant is currently in control of their villages. Varas sees to it that they are capable, tho. His guardsmen and soldiers are well trained, albeit under horrible circumstances, and he makes sure to remind them that failure is not an option.
