Read. The Bibliophage summons an illusion drawn from the subject matter of the book they are reading. The illusion deals psychic damage to the players but no damage to inanimate objects or scenery. The illusion’s have their own stat block, hit points and act immediately when summoned. Upon being reduced to 0 hit points, the illusion disappears. If the name of the book that the illusion was summoned from is correctly identified and spoken aloud, it will also disappear. In combat, identifying and speaking the name of the book count as full actions.

Tentacle Slap. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 10 ft., 1 target. Hit: 8 (1d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage.

Bonus Actions

Skittish. If the Bibliophage ends its turn within 10ft an enemy, it may move half its max distance as a bonus action, even if it has already moved its full distance this turn.

Browse. The Bibliophage may swap, or take at random a book from their surroundings before their turn as a free action.

Reactions

Bookworm. If attacked, the attacker must roll a CHA 18 saving throw. If the player succeeds, the Bibliophage drops the book that they are holding. If they fail, the Bibliophage eats the book, restoring 1d4 Hit Points. If an illusion based based on the book is present, it can only be dispelled by being reduced to 0 hit points.

Migraine. If more than four types of illusions are present, the Bibliophage emits a 30ft burst of psychic energy, dealing 1d8 damage to anyone caught in the burst, including itself. All illusions are dispelled, and the Bibliophage may immediately move its full distance as a free action.

Description

A large wormlike creature that takes up residence in libraries, archives and other places where books and scrolls lie in abundance. Although not generally aggressive, the Bibliophage will summon hostile illusory entities based on what it is currently reading in order to protect itself. Although it can read any known language, the Bibliophage seems unable or unwilling to communicate, and likewise although its illusions may have the ability to speak, they are not capable of conversation.
