Ice Walk. The dragon can move across and climb icy surfaces without needing to make an ability check. Additionally, Difficult Terrain composed of ice or snow doesn’t cost it extra movement.
Gem Resonance. While the dragon is not incapacitated, it has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
Star Shard Instability. The original origins of Star Shard dragons leaves a scar among the descendants. Whenever a damage type of magical means attacks the gem dragon, any attacks that use cold will replace that damage with the relevant type received for the next attack used.
Innate Spellcasting (Psionics). The dragon's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 16) and level 10 (can cast up to 5th level spells). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
- At will: Ray of Frost (might appear as a shimmering, pale green beam that chills), Mage Hand (the hand could be translucent and frosty green, leaving a faint trail of mist)
- 3/day each: Armor of Agathys (manifesting as a layer of glittering peridot ice forming around the dragon or its chosen creature), Hold Person (appearing as shimmering green psychic energy that freezes the target in place), Healing Word (could have a visual effect of gentle, pale green energy that thaws and mends)
- 1/day each: Cone of Cold (a blast of freezing, pale green energy and ice crystals), Greater Restoration (might have a visual of flowing, vibrant green energy that melts away afflictions like ice thawing in spring), Telekinesis (appearing as a field of pale green psychic energy manipulating ice and objects)
Legendary Resistance (3/Day, or 4/Day in Lair). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiattack. The dragon makes three Rend attacks.
Rend. Melee Attack Roll: +11, reach 10 ft. Hit: 13 (2d6 + 6) Psychic damage plus 4 (1d8) Cold damage.
Psychic-Cold Breath (Recharge 5–6). Constitution Saving Throw: DC 19, each creature in a 60-foot Cone. Failure: 54 (12d8) Psychic-Cold damage. Success: Half damage.
Tail. Melee Attack Roll: +11, reach 15 ft. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 6) Psychic damage plus 4 (1d8) Cold damage.
Change Shape. The dragon magically transforms into any creature that is Medium or Small, while retaining its game statistics (other than its size). This transformation ends if the dragon is reduced to 0 hit points or uses a bonus action to end it.
Psychic Step. The dragon magically teleports to an unoccupied space it can see within 60 feet of it.
Psychic Guidance. When a creature the dragon can see within 60 feet of it makes an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check, the dragon can telepathically grant it advantage on the roll. The dragon can use this reaction after the creature makes its roll, but before the outcome is determined.
Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, the dragon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. The dragon regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.
Psychic-Freezing Burst. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 14, each creature in a 30-foot-radius Sphere centered on a point the dragon can see within 120 feet. Failure: 7 (2d6) Psychic-Cold damage, and the target’s Speed is 0 until the end of the target’s next turn. Failure or Success: The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.
Frightful Presence. The dragon casts Fear, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 14). The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.
Pounce. The dragon moves up to half its Speed, and it makes one Rend attack.
Rend. The dragon makes one Rend attack.
Psionics (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon uses Psychic Step or Spellcasting.
Brain Freeze. (Costs 3 Actions). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 17, the dragon releases a freezing beam of psychic energy at a creature that it can see within 60 feet of it. Failure: 31 (9d6) Psychic-Cold damage. Failure or Success: The dragon can’t take this action again until a short rest.
Description
Star Shard Dragons
Shimmering with frigid energy and resonating with an otherworldly chill, Star Shard dragons possess an innate psionic connection to the crystallized remnants of a fallen meteorite from the Astral Plane, which has infused their forms and temperaments with a unique, cold luminescence. Though they often dwell in desolate, icy regions or atop windswept, frozen peaks, many are known for their serene wisdom and detached observation.
Astral Frost
When they hatch, Star Shard dragons have dull, frosted gray scales, with a few sharper, translucent green crystalline points, allowing the wyrmlings to blend into icy terrain in times of vulnerability. As they age, their scales lighten to a pale, glacial green, then gradually become more translucent, revealing the inner, starlight-like glow. The oldest Star Shard dragons possess scales of remarkable clarity that subtly refract the cold light, occasionally making them appear to shimmer like frozen aurorae and blend with the surrounding ice and snow.
The frigid energy of their astral origin radiates within Star Shard dragons' scales. It glows like distant starlight caught within ice between their bodies and the jagged, crystal-like spines and horns that sprout close to their heads and backs. These horns subtly hum with the dragon's mental state: sharpening with intense focus, softening with quiet contemplation, and gently pulsing with curiosity or a detached amusement.
Visions in Frozen Starlight
Many Star Shard dragons develop a profound connection to the celestial movements, seeing echoes of the Astral Plane in the patterns of stars and the dance of auroras. They interpret these celestial events as subtle glimpses into the currents of fate and the flow of cosmic energy. They thoughtfully observe the potential trajectories of those who seek them out, offering cryptic insights gleaned from their astral connection.
The unique infusion of astral energy fosters a serene and somewhat detached attitude in most of these dragons. They sometimes collect unusual ice formations or study the patterns of frost and snow, seeking to understand the underlying cosmic order reflected in their frozen domains. However, they fiercely oppose those who would disrupt the delicate balance of their territories or carelessly unleash chaotic astral energies, which can sometimes lead territorial white dragons or power-hungry mages seeking to exploit astral rifts to become temporary adversaries.
Glittering Icefalls
For their treasure hoards, Star Shard dragons prize flawless ice crystals with unusual internal structures, collections of frozen starlight in the form of rare minerals, meticulously crafted instruments for celestial observation, and artistic representations of nebulae and constellations etched in ice. When it comes to magical treasure, they seek items and spells that manipulate cold, reveal hidden truths, or resonate with the energies of the outer planes.
A Star Shard Dragon's Frozen Observatory
Star Shard dragons dwell in frigid locales, constructing intricate lairs of ice and snow that resemble crystalline observatories, often open to the starlit sky. Glittering ice formations scattered throughout their lairs subtly glow with captured astral light, and networks of ice caves and tunnels beneath the surface provide protected areas for their hoards. They use their ability to burrow through ice and snow to create hidden chambers and vantage points, allowing them to observe their surroundings with quiet vigilance.
Legend has it that the first Star Shard dragon arose in this region after consuming a large, multifaceted crystal that fell from the Astral Plane like a frozen tear of the cosmos. This event imbued it and its descendants with their unique connection to the stars and the chilling energies they now command.
The challenge rating of a legendary Star Shard dragon increases by 1 when it's encountered in its lair.
Lair and Lair Actions
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon can take one of the following lair actions; the dragon can't take the same lair action two rounds in a row:
- Beguiling Whisper. The dragon telepathically whispers to one creature within range of the dragon's telepathy. The creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed by the dragon until initiative count 20 on the next round. A creature charmed in this way obeys to the best of its ability any command the dragon issues that isn't directly harmful to the creature.
- Ice Passage. The dragon can open a passage through a wall of ice or snow that is up to 5 feet thick, creating an opening up to 30 feet wide and high.
- Frostmist's Aura. The dragon chooses a point it can see in the lair. Gleaming frostmist spills from that point to fill a 10-foot-radius sphere with dim light. Each creature other than the dragon in that area when the mist appears must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take 13 (2d12) cold damage and be outlined in the mist. Attack rolls made against an outlined creature have advantage, and the creature can't hide or benefit from being invisible. The frostmist around any creature fades on initiative count 20 on the next round.
Regional Effects
The region surrounding a legendary Star Shard dragon's lair is altered by the dragon's unique connection to astral ice and frozen starlight, creating one or more of the following effects:
- Unnatural Stillness: The air within 6 miles of the lair often becomes unnaturally still and cold. Light winds may whisper, but strong gusts and storms avoid the area unless magically compelled. This stillness can create an eerie silence and a noticeable drop in temperature.
- Astral Ice Veins: Veins of translucent, pale green ice laced with shimmering dust-like inclusions (resembling captured starlight) form within natural stone and along frozen surfaces within 6 miles of the lair. These formations are particularly prevalent in areas exposed to moonlight.
- Frigid Telemetry: Ice and crystalline structures (including quartz and the astral ice veins) within 6 miles of the lair become conduits for the dragon's psionic presence. As an action, the dragon can cast the Detect Thoughts spell, requiring no spell components and targeting any ice or crystalline structure in that region as if it were a creature.
- Lingering Chill: Any creature that finishes a long rest within 6 miles of the lair finds it more difficult to shake off the cold. They gain one level of exhaustion that is removed after they spend at least one hour in a significantly warmer environment (at least 20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the lair's vicinity).
- Hardened Resilience: Creatures native to icy environments within 6 miles of the lair exhibit increased resilience. They gain advantage on saving throws against the effects of extreme cold. If the dragon dies, this resilience fades over the course of 1d4 days. The existing veins of astral ice remain, but new formations occur at a normal rate for the region.
