Description
At first glance, Avaritian appears more wretched than regal. He kneels alone on a barren stretch of Mount Purgatory’s windswept mountainside, hunched over and weeping into cupped, trembling hands. His body is cloaked in tattered robes that once shimmered with gold thread — now faded, but still clinging to the illusion of grandeur. His skin is pale and stretched thin, almost translucent in places, veins coursing with liquid gold. His long, clawed fingers clutch at the dust, obsessively sifting it, whispering sweet nothings to what he believes are coins, crowns, and gemstones.
Though the landscape around him is stark and empty — nothing but gray stone and silence — Avaritian sees the world differently. In his shattered mind, he is surrounded by endless treasure: golden statues bow to him, rivers of coin flow between jeweled spires, and mountains gleam with platinum veins. He mutters to unseen servants, caresses imagined vaults, and snarls when the wind dares to move “his” coins.
But when others approach, the illusion turns hostile.
To Avaritian, intruders are thieves — lowly, greedy scavengers come to plunder his sacred hoard. His weeping stops. His eyes — pale, shining like coins struck with madness — lock onto the party with a mix of fear and fury. He rises slowly, posture broken but power undeniable, and roars:
“You won’t take it! It’s mine! Every coin, every crown! I earned it!”
And then the storm breaks. He attacks with the desperation of a starving man guarding his last meal, hurling illusions of wealth as weapons, clawing at anything that dares touch the dust he believes is gold.
Beneath the delusion, though, is something tragic: Avaritian is not a tyrant of wealth, but a prisoner of his own insatiable desire. His hoard is ash. His throne is stone. His crown is empty.
