Traits

Awakening of Ammet. Once per encounter, if Ashardalon would be reduced to 0 hit points, his current hit point total instead resets to 425 it points, he recharges his Breath Weapon, and he regains any expended uses of Legendary Resistance. Additionally, Ashardalon can now use the options in the "Mythic Actions" section for 1 hour.

Death Throes. Ashardalon explodes when he is reduced to 0 hit points for the first time after the Awakening of Ammet. Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 23, each creature in a 60-foot Emanation originating from Ashardalon. Failiure: 31 (9d6) Fire damage plus 31 (9d6) Force damage. Success: Half damage.

Inferno. At the end of each of Ashardalon's turns, each creature in a 15-foot Emanation originating from Ashardlon takes 18 (4d8) Fire damage.

Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Ashardalon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Unusual Nature. Ashardalon doesn't require food or drink.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes three Rend attacks. It can replace one attack with a use of Spellcasting to cast Flame Strike (level 5 version).

Rend. Melee Attack Roll: +18, reach 15 ft. Hit: 21(2d10 + 10) Slashing damage plus 13 (2d12) Fire damage.

Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 26, each creature in a 300-foot Cone. Failure: 117(26d8) Fire damage. Success: Half damage.

Spellcasting. Ashardalon casts one of the following spells, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 23, +15 to hit with spell attacks):

At Will: Command (level 2 version), Detect Magic, Flame Strike (level 5 version)
1/Day Each: Incendiary Cloud (level 8 version), Scrying

Bonus Actions

Teleport. Ashardalon uses his balor Ammet to teleport himself or a willing dragon within 10 feet of itself up to 60 feet to an unoccupied space he can see.

Legendary Actions

Legendary Action Uses: 3. Immediately after another creature’s turn, Ashardalon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. Ashardalon regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.

Commanding Presence. Ashardalon uses Spellcasting to cast Command (level 2 version). The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.

Fiery Rays. Ashardalon uses Spellcasting to cast Flame Strike (level 5 version). The dragon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.

Pounce. Ashardalon moves up to half his Speed without provoking Attacks of Opportunity and makes one Rend attack.

Mythic Actions

If Ashardalon''s Awakening of Ammet trait has activated in this fight, he can use the options below as legendary actions.

Shocking Blast. The balor Ammet within Ashardalon's heartgem unleashes a blast of electric energy. Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 23, each creature within a 30-foot Emanation originating from Ashardalon. Failure: 35 (10d6) Lightning damage and the target has disadvantage on their next melee attack. Success: Half damage and the target has no disadvantage.

Overheat. Ashardalon stokes his elemental flames to supercharge his next breath weapon attack.  The next time Ashardalon uses his Fire Breath, it deals an additional 59 (13d8) Force damage.

Description

Ashardalon is one of the oldest and largest Red Dragons in the multiverse, and has been taken (some say against his will) as the replacement for Ephelomon, Tiamat's primary consort. Long ago, Ashardalon (still considered Ancient amongst standard dragonkind) suffered a mortal wound when the blade of a Paladin of Bahamut sliced into his heart.  He attempted to extend his life by binding a balor called Ammet to his chest in order to function as a second heart.  His bond with the great demon is unstable, and at times it is unclear who is primarily in control, but together Ashardalon and Ammet have persisted for eons, constantly gaining in strength and power until they are now a Greatwyrm, as near to a demigod as dragonkind can get.   His unique combination with Ammet has led to a variety of novel abilities, mixing the powers of dragons and demons.

In recent years, Tiamat has called upon Ashardalon to replace the great yet fallen Ephelomon as her primary consort.  While Ashardalon has not the regality or dominating aura of the prior legendary consort, he makes up for it with his cunning and viciousness. He serves at Tiamat's leisure, though when she does not actively require his presence, he spends most of his time guarding the entrance to Tiamat's Lair in Avernus, Ammet delighting in killing any devils that foolishly wander too close to the Dragon Queen's domain.
