Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Auril’s Resurrected Metallic Dracohydra fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Multiple Heads. Auril’s Resurrected Metallic Dracohydra has five heads. While it has more than one head, it has advantage on saving throws against being blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, stunned, and knocked unconscious.
Whenever the dracohydra takes 30 or more damage in a single turn, one of its non-spectral heads dies. If all its non-spectral heads are dead, the dracohydra dies at the end of that turn.
At the end of its turn, the dracohydra regrows one [cold]ice[/cold] head for each of its non-spectral heads that has died since its last turn, unless it has taken radiant damage since its last turn. It regains 10 hit points for each head regrown this way.
The spectral gold head cannot be targeted or damaged. Its presence prevents that head from ever regenerating as an ice head. Only when all other heads have died will the dracohydra’s body collapse, the gold spirit at last finding release.
Reactive Heads. For each head the dracohydra has beyond one, it gets an extra reaction that can be used only for opportunity attacks.
Unusual Nature. The dracohydra does not require air, food, drink, or sleep.
Spectral Gold Head Instability. At the start of each of the dracohydra’s turns, roll 1d6 to determine whether the spectral gold head remains under control.
On a result of 1–4, the head remains controlled and behaves normally.
On a result of 5–6, the head breaks free of the lich’s control and behaves erratically this round.
Uncontrolled Behavior: If the spectral head is uncontrolled, its instability disrupts the dracohydra’s usual tactics:
-
If the dracohydra uses Multiattack, it makes four bite attacks against hostile creatures and one bite attack against itself. Roll 1d4 to determine which head the spectral head attacks:
1. Brass Head (Fire)
2. Copper Head(Acid)
3. Skeletal Bronze Head (Necrotic)
4. Ice-Reanimated Silver Head (Cold) -
If the dracohydra uses Prismatic Breath, the spectral head targets Thalvrax Winterborne instead of contributing to the shared cone. Thalvrax must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw or take 8d10 fire damage (half on success). This overrides the breath contribution from that head only.
Multiattack. Aurel’s Resurrected Metallic Dracohydra makes as many Bite attacks as it has heads. If the Spectral Gold Head is uncontrolled (see Spectral Gold Head Instability), it makes only four Bite attacks against hostile creatures, and one against a random head.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 3d10+9 piercing damage plus 4d6 damage of a type determined by the head making the attack:
-
Skeletal Bronze Head: [damage type]necrotic[/damage type]
-
Spectral Gold Head: [damage type]radiant[/damage type]
-
Ice-Reanimated Silver Head: [damage type]cold[/damage type]
-
Zombified Copper Head: [damage type]acid[/damage type]
-
Possessed Brass Head: [damage type]fire;blue fire[/damage type]
Prismatic Breath (Recharge 5–6). Each of the dracohydra’s functional heads exhales destructive energy in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 81 (9d10) damage of a type corresponding to the head:
acid,
cold,
fire,
necrotic, or
radiant plus fire.
On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage.
Multiheaded Awareness. When the dracohydra is targeted by an attack, it may use one reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll.
Reactive Heads. For each head the dracohydra has beyond one, it gets an extra reaction that can be used only for opportunity attacks or the multiheaded awareness reaction.
The dracohydra can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The hydra regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Tail Swipe. The dracohydra makes a tail attack: Melee Weapon Attack, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning.
Bite (Costs 2 Actions). The dracohydra makes 2 Bite attacks against two different creatures within range.
Description
This resurrected ancient metallic dracohydra was reanimated through Auril’s divine winter magic. Its once-proud form now shambles under layers of rime and rot. Jagged plates of frozen scale cover exposed bones, and its breath chills the air around it with unnatural stillness.
Each of its five heads bears the mark of its corrupted state. The brass head burns with unnatural blue fire, its eyes alight with Auril’s icy hatred. The copper and bronze heads are zombified or skeletal mockeries of their former selves, while the silver head has been entirely reformed from enchanted ice. Only the spectral gold head retains a glimmer of the dragon's soul, but it has been twisted into madness, prone to sudden rebellion.
Though the spectral head cannot be damaged, it anchors the creature’s fractured soul. If the other heads fall, the ghost vanishes in peace, and the dracohydra collapses with it. Until then, the beast is bound to Thalvrax Winterborne's will—though not always obediently.
