Dreadful Aura. At the end of each enemy's turn, they must make a DC 14 Wis save if within 60ft of the Bone Collector or if they targeted the Bone Collector or one of its minions with an attack or spell this turn, on a failed save the character gains one level of Bone Collector Dread and suffers the effects as detailed below, on a successful save, or if no save was required this turn, the character loses one level of Bone Collector Dread.
Bone Collector Dread, level one. The character is frightened of the Bone Collector and its minions.
Bone Collector Dread, level two. The character's fear becomes so great they are are paralyzed.
Bone Collector Dread, level three. The character appears to die from their fear on the spot but is really under the effect of a feign death. Once a character reaches this level they do not need to continue making saves against the Bone Collector's Dreadful Aura and can not lose Bone Collector Dread levels until the spell expires in one hour, when this happens they are automatically reduced to two levels of Bone Collector Dread.
Temporary Death. Bone Collectors are the caretaker minions of the Night Mother and no so easily defeated as other creatures when reduced to 0hp their bodies collapse and their dread aura fade but they are not truly destroyed. The Bone Collector regains consciousness in 24 hours and is returned to full hp if its remains were not scattered if they were it must spend time raiding graves and the inevitable stash of body parts each Bone Collector has hidden in the mists of Barovia returning to full hp once it has collected enough body parts. A Bone Collector in this state radiates magic of the conjuration, transmutation, and enchantment schools.
During its turn the Bone Collector takes one of the following actions:
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d12 + 4) bludgeoning damage and knocks the target 5 ft back. The Bone Collector only takes this action if in melee already, it will not willingly enter melee with an opponent that isn't paralyzed.
Howl Recharge 5-6. The Bone Collector throws back its head and releases a soul-piercing howl, each character within 60' must make a DC 14 Wis save or progress one level on the Bone Collectors Aura Ability.
Reassemble. The Bone Collector selects one [monster]strahd zombie[/monser] within 5ft and removes it from play, the Bone Collector then regains hp equal to that[monster]strahd zombie[/monser]'s hp total before it was removed.
Reassemble. The Bone Collector points at one strahd zombie* that has at least body part remaining with hitpoints, that strahd zombie* reassembles and is returned to full hp.
Reanimate. The Bone Collector points at 4 (1d6) undead with 0 hp and returns them to 1hp each. Disembodied parts of a strahd zombie* are each considered their own creature for the purposes of this effect.
Bonus Action - Necromantic Aura. All undead, including all parts of a strahd zombie* within 60ft of the Bone Collector that have at least 1hp remaining heal 8 (2d4 + 3) hp.
* The Bone Collector was designed to be a support/leader of a group of my version of Strahd Zombies but tooltips don't work for homebrew monsters and I can't seem to share this with the community if it includes a link anywhere in the text, even if it's to a dndbeyond.com url, so I highly recommend you search my homebrew for "Strahd Zombie (Mine)" and replace each reference to strahd zombie above with one of mine.
Description
Bone Collectors are monstrous constructs made of the bones of countless former undead creatures that have been assembled in an only vaguely humanoid shape. When first created these constructs were build from the bones of thirteen twice fallen human soldiers in the service of Strahd but over time the Bone Collectors have repaired damaged they've suffered with whatever bones they can find and as such have taken on distorted shapes with too many vertebrae, several skulls, and limbs of various animals all fitted together into a creature that doesn't move quite right but is a true terror to behold. It is no uncommon for a damaged Bone Collector to slay wildlife, peasants, or livestock, animate their corpses and tear them apart once more in order to find bones that fit their needs.
