Low Float. Wazzle Yak default to floating three inches off of the ground whenever on the Material Plane.  They walk on their feet if carrying 500 pounds or more.

Incorporeal Movement. The Wazzle Yak can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.

Actions

Wazzle Yak cannot take actions other than movement actions.

Bonus Actions

Wazzle Yak cannot take bonus actions.

Reactions

Slow Roll.  Sensitive to specific reverberations, Wazzle Yak slowly roll to their sides while floating, 180 degrees in 30 seconds, if ever they hear any tree fall, any portal open to another plane, any waterfall, any hag's cackle, or any  repeat of the first word they'd heard spoken when first on the material plane.

Description

The Wazzle Yak is an elusive, mythic aberration native to the Border Ethereal. It remains mostly incorporeal while in the wild, but presents as a voluminously bulbous, nearly spherical version of its Material Plane counterpart.  Its horns curl like corkscrews, adding a full loop for every twenty years it is alive. Its fur never stops growing and comes in two shades, blonde and albino. Groups of Wazzle Yak, known as "faints," migrate through thick fogs the full "circumference" of the Border Ethereal once every solstice there. They move exclusively through a narrow a slice of the Ethereal Plane that, oddly, does not mirror the Material Plane at all, but instead mirrors the empty, airy canal of shifting gravities between the upper and lower paradises of Bytopia. Scholars suspect aspects of the plane of Bytopia to be refracting through an undiscovered demi-plane they've dubbed The Versal Stitch, creating a niche environment for Wazzle Yaks.

Wazzle Yak are an extremely rare sight for inhabitants of the Material Plane.  All 25 confirmed sightings in history took place at extreme altitudes in The Cloud Peaks, The Barrier Peaks, and at The Spine of The World, and then only in the sonic reverberations made when a tree naturally falls in mountaintop woods. Taming a Wazzle Yak requires action within the few seconds one might appear on the Material Plane. The exact technique remains a secret, supposedly known only to venerable elves of the wild, those yielding old, true name magic, and ancient chromatic dragons that hunger while in flight.

Contrary to local myth, Wazzle Yak are not extra-dimensional, nor are they magical. They simply have the ability to re-enter the Ethereal Plane at will, a trait interrupted when saddled or otherwise tethered by material objects.  While saddled or tethered, their bodies are translucent, and incorporeal, but the saddles or tethers hold their position on the creature's body, allowing only the owner (usually the person who captured  them) to mount, ride, or pull.  Others who attempt this are instantly shunted through the Ethereal Plane to reappear on the material plane 15 feet east of where they made the attempt, 5 additional feet for every spot that would otherwise force them to re-materialize inside a solid object.

Wazzle Yak have feet, but float three inches off the ground whenever on the Material Plane.

Wazzle Yak eat only air.

Wazzle Yak immovably hold their position and lie down when they are ordered to or otherwise directed to fight.
