Traits

Dream Eater. The baku gains sustenance from devouring dreams and does not need to eat, drink, or sleep. If the baku goes more than 5 days without devouring dreams, it suffers levels of Exhaustion, as if suffering from Malnutrition.

Fear Chaser. The baku has Advantage on attacks against creatures with fear effects, such as Frightful Presence, the Fear spell, Horrifying Visage, or other effects that can cause a creature to gain the Frightened condition. In addition, the baku does double damage to such creatures.

Guardian. Creatures of the baku's choice within 60 ft. of it have Advantage on saving throws made to avoid the Frightened condition.

Magic Resistance. The baku has Advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Nightmare Immunity. If the baku is subjected to an effect that would cause it to gain the Frightened condition, it instead regains Hit Points equal to the Challenge Rating or Level of the creature that caused the effect.

Nightmare Sense. The baku can pinpoint the location of any creature with the Frightened condition within 1 mile of it.

Yokai Blessing. The baku has Advantage on saving throws it makes to avoid the Charmed and Unconscious conditions.

Actions

Multiattack. The baku makes two Claw attacks, one Dream Trunk attack, and one Tusks attack.

Claws. Melee Attack Roll: +6, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) Slashing damage. If the baku moves a least 20 ft. straight toward a creature before the hit, the target has the Prone condition, and the baku can make one Tusks attack against it as a Bonus Action.

Dream Trunk. Melee or Ranged Attack Roll: +6, reach 10 ft. or range 30 ft. Hit: 29 (4d12+3) Psychic damage.

Tusks. Melee Attack Roll: +6, reach 5 ft. Hit: 8 (1d10+3) Piercing damage.

Devour Dreams. The baku devours the fear of a creature with the Frightened condition within 30 ft. of it that it can see. That creature no longer has the condition, and the baku gains 16 3d10 Temporary Hit Points. Instead of devouring fear, the baku can devour the dreams of a sleeping creature within 30 ft. of it, gaining 16 3d10 Temporary Hit Points.

Spellcasting. The baku casts one of the following spells, using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (save DC 14):

At Will: Fly, Lesser Restoration, Sleep
3/Day: Protection from Evil and Good (Fey, Fiends, and Undead only)
1/Day: Banishment (Evil creatures only)

Superior Invisibility (Recharge 5-6). The baku casts the Greater Invisibility spell on itself, using the same spellcasting ability as Spellcasting.

Description

Baku are curious yokai that devour dreams, specifically nightmares. These creatures are the sworn enemies of night terrors and the outsider known as "The Dreamer". Their presence in a home is considered to be a good omen and a sign of an outsider's favor.

Dream Eaters. Baku gain sustenance from devouring the dreams of others, meaning they are often found in regions populated by sentient creatures like Humanoids, and are particularly fond of areas where children are populous, chasing off and devouring their nightmares.

Good Omens. Baku are revered throughout the realms as creatures of protection and their likeness is sewn into the fabrics of bedsheets and pillows. Many wear amulets depicting baku to drive off sickness and evil spirits, and many temples sport carvings of baku, thought to scare off demons and devils that might attempt to invade sacred places.

Outsider Origins. Many believe the baku to have been created by an outsider, some going so far as to suggest The Dreamer accidentally created the baku by throwing out remnants of wonderful dreams it despised. Others believe The Merchant formed the baku by throwing together the elements of various creature "leftovers" as part of an experiment. While their origin is unknown, scholars agree baku are wondrous creatures worthy of further study. Members of the highest orders of spellcasters have even developed "sleep studies" using patients and baku to try and examine their powers and their mind-altering abilities.

Protectors. Baku will often latch onto a particular location - a home, temple, sacred place, or another region. The baku defends creatures within the region, rarely revealing itself, but ensuring they are protected from evil beings, and that their nightmares are devoured. Creatures in such a place often benefit from untroubled slumber.
