Traits

Legendary Resistance (4/Day or 5/day if in Lair). If Vecna fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Haunt. When Betelgeuse hits a creature with his Spectral Blade, the target becomes haunted for 1 minute. While haunted, the target sees spectral versions of Betelgeuse's face around corners and hears echoing laughter. At the start of each turn, the haunted target must succeed on a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened until the start of its next turn.

Spellcasting. Betelgeuse's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 25). He can cast the following spells:

Damn it! He Won't Die! If Betelgeuse is slain, his soul refuses to accept its fate and lives on as a disembodied spirit that fashions a new body for itself after 10d100 minutes. Betelgeuse’s new body appears within 100 miles of where he was slain. When the new body is complete, Betelgeuse regains all his hit points and becomes active again.

Actions

Multiattack. Betelgeuse makes three spectral blade attacks or two spectral blade attacks and one wail of chaos.

Spectral Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 31 (4d10 + 9) necrotic damage and the target is haunted (see below).

Wail of Chaos. Betelgeuse releases a terrifying wail. Each creature of his choice within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw or be wracked with fear and disorientation, taking 40 (9d8) psychic damage and becoming incapacitated until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions

Ethereal Jaunt. As a bonus action, Betelgeuse can shift from the Material Plane to the Ethereal Plane, or vice versa. While on the Ethereal Plane, he can affect and be affected only by other creatures on that plane

Spectral Mockery (Recharge 5–6). Betelgeuse whispers a cruel, mocking echo of a creature’s own thoughts back to them. Choose one creature Betelgeuse can see within 60 feet. That creature must succeed on a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws until the start of Betelgeuse’s next turn as ghostly voices undermine its confidence.

Reactions

Betelgeuse can take up to three reactions per round but only one per turn.

Haunting Riposte. When a creature within 10 feet of Betelgeuse hits him with an attack, he can unleash a sudden burst of spectral energy. The attacker must make a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or become haunted (as per his Haunt trait) and take 22 (4d10) necrotic damage. On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and is not haunted.

Fractured Echo. When Betelgeuse is targeted by a spell that forces him to make a saving throw, he can momentarily fracture his form into illusory duplicates. He gains advantage on the saving throw, and if he succeeds, spectral laughter erupts, causing the caster to take 21 (6d6) psychic damage.

Legendary Actions

Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, Betelgeuse can expend a use to take one of the following actions. Betelgeuse regains all expended uses at the start of each of his turns.

Ethereal Shift. Betelgeuse moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Laughter of the Damned. Unleashing a bout of otherworldly laughter, Betelgeuse causes each enemy he can see within 30 feet to make a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw or take 33 (6d10) psychic damage and be stunned until the start of their next turn.

Poltergeist Frenzy (Costs 2 Actions). Objects within 60 feet come alive, attacking all enemies. Each creature must succeed on a DC 24 Dexterity saving throw or take 42 (12d6) bludgeoning damage as the environment descends into chaos.

Description

Description: Floating amidst a shroud of spectral energy, Betelgeuse appears as an ethereal figure, constantly shifting between visages of mirth and malevolence. Eerie, flickering lights encircle his form, dancing to an unseen rhythm that resonates with a deep magical force. His voice echoes from beyond the grave, a haunting melody that disrupts the flow of time and reality. With a mere glance of his piercing phantasmal eyes, the air grows heavy with a mix of laughter and despair, each whisper a link to the spectral realm. Betelgeuse embodies the chaos and allure of the supernatural, reigning over the spirit world with unpredictable benevolence, or devastating malice, hinged on the whims of All Hallows Eve.

Lore: Betelgeuse is whispered to be one of the Seven Kings of All Hallows Eve, a title marked by equal parts terror and intrigue. Summoned through a chant thrice spoken, his unpredictable nature makes him both an ally and a foe. Those who seek to bond with the otherworldly often find themselves ensnared in his web of phantasms, forever changed by his spectral touch.
