Actions

Necrotic Burst. Melee or Ranged Attack Roll: +10, reach 5ft or range 150ft. Hit: 27 (4d10+5 Necrotic damage).

Bonus Actions

Misty Step. 3/DayAemon casts Misty Step, requiring no spell components and using the same spellcasting ability as Spellcasting.

Reactions

Protective Magic. 3/Day. Aemon casts Counterspell or Shield in response to the spell’s trigger, using the same spellcasting ability as Spellcasting.

Temporal Deflection. 3/Day. Aemon makes a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw. On a success, the triggering attack is redirected toward a different creature of the DM’s choice within 60 feet that Aemon can see. On a failed save, Aemon takes the damage but immediately regains 15 hit points.

Legendary Actions

Legendary Resistance. 3/Day. If Aemon fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Legendary Action Uses: 3. Immediately after another creature’s turn, Aemon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. Aemon regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.

Back to the Past. Aemon regains 1d6 + 10 hit points and may end one condition or spell effect that has affected him since the end of his last turn. If no effect qualifies, he may instead teleport up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.

Space Travel. Aemon teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see. Each creature within 5 feet of the space he leaves must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls until the end of their next turn.

Villain Actions

Aemon has access to the following villain actions, each of which occurs once during the encounter when its trigger is met. These actions do not cost actions, bonus actions, or legendary action uses.

Planar Pandemonium. Trigger: On Aemon’s first round of combat.
Aemon tears a rift between planes, releasing chaos into the battlefield. Random creatures are dragged from distant realms, totaling CR 10, and appear in unoccupied spaces within 60 feet. These creatures are hostile to all other creatures, including one another. They roll initiative as a group and fight to the death. Possible combinations include: an aboleth; a mind flayer and a spectator; a bulette and an otyugh; or a chimera and a cambion. The DM determines the creatures summoned based on the environment, theme, or desired level of chaos.

Call of Duty. Trigger: Aemon is reduced below 150 hit points.
Aemon uses a telepathic bond to summon his most loyal general. Tharzaar (use adult blue dragon statistics) emerges from the sky and lands in an unoccupied space within 60 feet. Tharzaar rolls initiative immediately and fights alongside Aemon until slain.

Fractured Self. Trigger: Aemon is reduced below 50 hit points.
Aemon stops time for 3 turns. During this frozen moment, he uses one turn to travel to another plane and time, and another to return in an unoccupied space within 30 feet—accompanied by a younger version of himself pulled from an alternate timeline (use the Archmage stat block). The younger self shares Aemon’s initiative count but takes its turn immediately after his. It acts independently but follows Aemon’s commands.

Description

Aemon Serthoris was once one of the most gifted arcanists of the Vault of the Unseen, an elite circle responsible for maintaining the Sigil — a vast magical construct built to contain Azerghul, a planar entity born during the Cataclysm of the Vale, a battle that tore the world apart a century ago. Azerghul is not a god nor a beast, but a living fracture in reality — an entity that bends time, memory, and existence simply by being. The battle that unleashed it left behind the Lands of Silence, a region where reality itself remains unstable. It is there that Azerghul still lingers—trapped not by chains, but by illusion. The Sigil does not hold it by force, but by deception—convincing it that it is bound and limiting its awareness.

While the rest of the Vault focused on preserving that illusion, Aemon looked deeper. He turned his attention to the Magic of Silence—a chaotic, living residue of Azerghul’s power. Though officially forbidden, Aemon believed it to be a thread of immense potential, a pathway to understanding how Azerghul truly functions—particularly its terrifying ability to affect time itself. His theory was confirmed during a sanctioned expedition, when a burst of Silence magic briefly displaced part of his team. They returned unharmed, but changed. Some reported visions of younger selves. Others spoke of places that don’t exist on this plane. Aemon connected the patterns. Azerghul was not merely contained—it was operating across timelines and realities.

Then came tragedy. During a research session, Aemon’s wife, Lyssari, fell into an irreversible coma after contact with a Silence-infused artifact. Her mind simply vanished—unreachable, undetectable, gone. That moment shattered Aemon’s restraint. If the Magic of Silence could unravel a soul, perhaps it could restore one. Or even undo the moment entirely. He began working in secret—testing forbidden models, simulating temporal breaches, and quietly building the foundation of a greater truth. When discovered, Aemon defended his work—and was declared a heretic.

Now, hidden in the Lands of Silence, Aemon has founded the Hourbound Order — a clandestine brotherhood of scholars, exiles, and believers. They do not seek to worship Azerghul, but to understand it fully—something Aemon believes is impossible so long as the Sigil stands. To confront the truth of Azerghul, it must be seen unbound. And only then, with complete knowledge of its nature, can it be contained—or destroyed.
