Description
Vlaakith is the revered queen of the githyanki and is at the center of their faith and society. she is the ruler of the githyanki people, she demands and receives utter obedience and faith in her.
Vlaakith is the name of the many rulers of the githyanki after the disappearance of Gith. During the rebellion and war against the illithid, Vlaakith convinced Gith to negotiate an alliance in person with Tiamat the Dragon Queen of the Nine Hells. Gith never returned from the Nine Hells, instead, the Red Dragon Ephelomon brought news of the pact and that red dragons had been pledged to the cause of Gith; Ephelomon also proclaimed Vlaakith the rightful ruler until Gith returns to retake the throne. From this point, every ruler of the Githyanki has taken the name Vlaakith, with the current ruler being Vlaakith CLVII.
Even before the war against the illithid was fully won, the gith fractured—those who followed Zerthimon rejected Vlaakith's rule and became the githzerai, leading to a bitter and ongoing war between githyanki and githzerai.
Vlaakith used her mastery of arcane magic to create permanent strongholds within the Astral Plane for the githyanki, the greatest of which is Tu'narath, the capital city of githyanki built upon a dead deity. it is from Tu'narath that Vlaakith rules, sat atop her Throne of Bones, an artifact powered by dead illithid and made up of the remains of countless illithid and elder brains.
Vlaakith CLVII. Vlaakith CLVII (the 157th of her name) is much unlike any Vlaakith that came before her, for she has broken the chain of Vlaakiths by embracing lichdom. She has remained ruler for over a thousand years. Further, this Vlaakith has long ago established the ceremony of ascension, where githyanki who prove their martial skills or arcane skill and unwavering loyalty to Vlaakith are ascended to a paradise of endless delights within Vlaakith's innermost court.
From their birth, githyanki are taught to revere the Vlaakith, and to live, die, and fight for her. They became utterly devoted zealots who lay down their lives in her name and seek the greatest honor of ascension to serve as an eternal warrior within Vlaakith's court.
The ascension is a grand ceremony alleged to reward loyal githyanki. The truth of ascension is a well-guarded secret—none who undergo it are ever seen or contacted again, their souls seemingly erased from existence. Vlaakith instead drains and consumes their souls and strength, and becomes more powerful with the souls she consumes. Vlaakith who rivals the great sword masters and archmagis in existence but seeks a power far greater: Divinity.
Whether Vlaakith merely consumes them or something even more eldritch occurs remains a mystery as none of the souls of the ascended can be contacted to life in any way. Perhaps an element of the ascension is true, but none can see, as Vlaakith guards this secret closely and takes drastic action to keep it so. Those who attempt to divine ascended or any information a bout ascension are met with bizarre and horrific fates.
Vlaakith is a deeply paranoid individual. She sees treachery in every shadow, believing that even her most devoted servants could betray her. She is also the supreme leader of the githyanki military and oversees the supreme commanders and grand inquisitors. She often plays them against ne another to secure her rule, and ascends those who become too troublesome or powerful. she is willing to the souls of any githyanki to increase her strength and secure her rule and path to divinity. As such, Vlaakith's goal is to obtain divinity above all else. It is not clear how she seeks to obtain it, through the worship of the githyanki, consuming souls through ascension, the dead deity that Tu'narath is built upon, a combination of all, or another plan yet to be revealed.
Vlaakith suffers no threat to her rule, no contenders for her throne, and no divergent views. Her rule is absolute and unwavering. However, her greatest threats is her own people. They obey her and do so willingly, but the githyanki's raids take them outside of the rigid doctrine and zealotry of Vlaakith's imposed society and exposes them to other views, people, and the potentially two most dangerous; To the lie of ascension or to Orpheus, Prince of the Comet, and supposed True Heir of Gith. If this became widespread, her people may throw Vlaakith down in the same way the illithid were laid low. Vlaakith's solution is to increase the dogma around her divinity and make use of Inquisitors to root up heretics.
Personality. Vlaakith is a regal and distant person, the result of an exceptionally long lifespan, and her chief motivations are to maintain her absolute hold over the githyanki and achieve divinity. To this end, she is willing to consume the souls of powerful githyanki through ascension, to both bring closer to divinity and dispose of threats to her rule. Vlaakith maintains a facade of care towards loyal githyanki and her people generally, however it is just that; a facade to cover her brutal ambition of godhood. In this ambition for divinity she has become a deeply paranoid and jealous person.
Despite her megalomania and obsession with achieving divinity, Vlaakith is incredibly charming which has been essential to holding the githyanki together, defeating those who would rise up against her before they even think to rise up, maintaining the lie of ascension, and reaching the point of being worshiped as a deity of the githyanki. Vlaakith is also incomprehensibly intelligent. In fact, she may be one of the most intelligent creatures amongst all the planes of existence; this comes across in her planning ability to accurately assess the capabilities of creatures just on sight.
As Vlaakith is the absolute and unquestioned leader of the githyanki and an almost deity to them, certainly she aspires to godhood. If Vlaakith is not treated with the level of deference that she expects, she visibly becomes angry, and if faced with continued disrespect, she can act impetuous by using Power Word Kill if she recognizes it can kill the disrespectful creature. Otherwise, she may make use of Dominate Monster to make them kneel and grovel.
Lair and Lair Actions
Vlaakith's Lair
The city of Tu’narath is built on and in the corpse’s upper body, with a central district in the area corresponding to its chest and ancillary districts radiating outward along its six outstretched arms and toward its head. Despite the body’s partial destruction, the occasional tremor that echoes through its rocky mass suggests that some spark of life might still linger deep within.
While Vlaakith resides in Susurrus, the Palace of Whispers, her will extends all throughout the city of Tu'narath.
The region containing Vlaakith’s lair is warped by her presence, creating the following effects:
All-Seeing. While in her lair, Vlaakith can cast Clairvoyance, requiring no spell components and using the same spellcasting ability as its Spellcasting action.
Inevitable Siphon. Whenever a Humanoid or Githyanki dies within 1 mile of the lair, its soul is immediately consumed by Vlaakith. A Creature whose soul is consumed in this way can be brought back to life only by a True Resurrection or Wish spell.
If Vlaakith is destroyed or moves her lair elsewhere, these effects end immediately. These effects resume if Vlaakith gains a new body (see her Spirit Jar trait).
