Traits

Ethereal Jaunt. As a bonus action, the basan can magically shift from the Material Plane to the Ethereal Plane, or vice versa.

Actions

Multiattack. The basan makes three attacks: one with its wings and two with its bite or claw.

Wing. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage. If the target is size medium or smaller, it must make a DC 17 Strength or Dexterity saving throw or be knocked back 5 ft.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 5) slashing damage.

Fire Breath. The basan exhales fire in an 15 foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (5d10) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Reactions

Blurred Existence. The Basan enters a semi-ethereal state, imposing disadvantage on one attack, or gains advantage on saving throws.

Flutter. While falling, the basan can flap its wings, slowing its descent to 60 ft. per round. If it does so, it can land on its feet and takes no falling damage.

Description

The basan is a creature native to the elemental plane of fire where it eats mostly embers and charred remains of anything flammable, beating its wings in elation after enjoying a full meal. Often described as giant chicken, the basan is incapable of flight and is usually not hostile, and will typically disappear into the ethereal plane when feeling threatened. When they are provoked, they prove themselves to be formidable opponents. Valued for their plumage and brilliant red combs that resemble flames, basan are often targeted by efreeti and other poachers; however, those that think the basan is an easy target are frequently proven wrong, if not by their powerful wings and claws, then by their fiery breath. More crafty denizens of the elemental plane of fire will domesticate basan, turning them into powerful and dangerous mounts.
