Legend of Flesh and Form. The Apex Mimic can assume the appearance of any non-magical structure or object up to 20x20 feet (such as a room, cart, forge, tree). While motionless, it is indistinguishable from an object.
Master of Hunger. Whenever the Apex Mimic reduces a creature to 0 HP, it can immediately reproduce, spawning a Medium Mimic in an adjacent unoccupied space.
False Appearance. While motionless, the mimic is indistinguishable from a normal object.
Shapechanger. The mimic can use its action to polymorph into an object or back into its true, amorphous form. Its statistics are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Adhesive (Improved). Any creature that touches the Apex Mimic (even with a weapon) must make a DC 15 Strength save or be grappled. A grappled creature is restrained, and their weapon is stuck unless they succeed a DC 15 strength check to pull it free.
Multiattack. The Apex Mimic makes three attacks: one with Bite and two with Pseudopods.
Bite Attack. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., One target. Hit: 19 (3d8 + 6) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) acid damage.
Pseudopod. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 10 ft., One target. Hit: 14 (2d10 + 3) bludgeoning damage. Target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be grappled (escape DC 15). Until the grapple ends, the Apex Mimic can't use that pseudopod on another target.
Devour Object (Recharge 4). The Apex Mimic targets one non-magical object or structure within 5 feet (max 10x10 ft area). It dissolves it instantly (walls, crates, doors, weapons), leaving behind no remains. If it's a creature's armor or shield, the target must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or lose the item.
Crushing Embrace (Recharge 5). All grappled creatures engulfed against it's body. They are restrained, and take 22 (4d10) acid damage at the start of each of their turns. Escaping requires a DC 15 Strength or Dexterity check as an action
Consume in Silence (Recharge 6). The Apex mimic vanishes into the environment for 1 round. It becomes invisible, undetectable by tremorsense or blindsight, and may reposition up to 30 feet. If it ends this movement adjacent to a creature, it may use a free grapple attack.
Shifting Anatomy. As a bonus action, the Apex Mimic can reshape its body, gaining one of the following effects (lasts until the start of it's next turn):
- +2 AC (hardened Form)
- +10 ft. reach (lashing tongue form)
- Advantage on Dex saves (fluid form)
Split Reaction (1/day). When reduced to 50% HP or lower, the Apex Mimic can split as a reaction, spawning 2 Medium Mimics in unoccupied spaces within 10 feet. These act on the Apex Mimic's initiative immediately after it.
Legendary Actions
The Apex Mimic can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature’s turn. The Apex Mimic regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Can take 2 Legendary actions, choosing from:
- Shift form (Costs 1 Action). Change appearance or move 10 ft.
- Spawnling Lurch (Costs 2 Action). One Mimic Spawn within 30 ft. makes an immediate bite attack
- Devour Light (Costs 2 Action). Dim Light in a 30 ft. radius becomes darkness until the end of its next turn.
If your monster has two legendary actions, here’s how it works according to the rules in the Monster Manual:
-
Legendary actions happen at the end of another creature’s turn, not during your monster’s own turn.
-
You can use one legendary action per trigger (end of turn), but you can do this multiple times in the round as long as you have actions left.
-
You regain all legendary actions at the start of your monster’s turn.
So with 2 legendary actions, in a typical round you could:
-
End of Player A’s turn → Spend 1 legendary action.
-
End of Player C’s turn → Spend your second legendary action.
You couldn’t use both at the same end-of-turn unless the ability explicitly costs 2 actions. It’s basically a “reaction-like” pool you can spread across the round between other creatures’ turns.
Description
The First Hunger (Apex Mimic)
Large aberration, chaotic evil
This ancient aberration towers over lesser mimics, its warped body an unholy fusion of treasure chest and monstrous predator. Its box-like carapace is rimmed with jagged teeth, framed in weathered gold filigree and encrusted with barnacles from centuries of predation. Four elongated, sinewy arms tipped with clawed hands grip the ground like a spider, each movement deliberate and predatory.
From its gaping maw spills a thick, slick tongue the size of a great serpent—its surface rough as stone, its taste buds bristling like barbs. The tongue lashes with terrifying speed, pulling prey into the mouth where rows of teeth snap shut with bone-crushing force.
The First Hunger’s skin shifts between a mottled violet and bruised black, its sheen betraying both alien vitality and the faint glimmer of treasure to lure the greedy. Gold coins cling unnaturally to its tongue and body, as though magnetized by some fell magic, luring victims closer with the promise of wealth.
Legends claim it is the first mimic—older than kingdoms, older than maps. It learns. It plans. It feeds not for hunger alone, but for the joy of the hunt. Entire settlements vanish when it prowls, their final moments marked by the flicker of something in the shadows that wasn’t there before.
