Legendary Resistance (3/Day, or 4/Day in Lair). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Stone Hide. While standing on rock or earth, the dragon gains resistance to all damage except force and psychic.
Horned Juggernaut. If the dragon moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a creature and hits it with its gore attack, the target takes an extra 27 (6d8) bludgeoning damage and must succeed on a DC 21 Strength save or be knocked prone and restrained under rubble.
Innate Spellcasting. The dragon’s spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 18). It requires no components. The dragon can innately cast:
-
At will: mold earth, detect magic
-
3/day each: stone shape, dispel magic, wall of stone
-
1/day each: earthquake, flesh to stone
Multiattack. The dragon makes three attacks: one with its bite, one with its claws, and one with its gore.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 30 (4d10 + 8) piercing damage.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d8 + 8) slashing damage.
Gore (Horn). Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 26 (4d8 + 8) piercing damage.
Acidic Mud Torrent Breath (Recharge 5–6). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 21, each creature in a 60-foot Cone. Failure: 81 (18d8) Acid and Bludgeoning damage on a failed save. On a failed save, creatures are also restrained until the end of their next turn as the mud hardens around them. Success: Half damage.
Petrifying Dust (Recharge 6). The dragon exhales a cloud of stone-gray dust in a 60 ft. cone. Each creature must make a DC 20 Constitution save. On a failed save, a creature is restrained as its body begins to turn to stone. The restrained creature must repeat the saving throw at the end of its next turn, becoming petrified on a second failure. The effect ends on a success.
Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, the dragon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. The dragon regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.
-
Detect. The dragon makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.
-
Horn Slam. The dragon makes a Gore attack.
-
Stone Shards (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon causes jagged stone to erupt in a 20 ft. radius within 60 ft. Each enemy must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity save or take 27 (6d8) piercing damage.
-
Earthen Grasp (Costs 3 Actions). The ground erupts into stony hands in a 20 ft. radius. Each enemy must succeed on a DC 20 Strength save or be restrained until the start of the dragon’s next turn.
Description
Lore (Adult Stone Dragon)
An Adult Stone Dragon is less a beast and more a moving fortress. Its scales resemble interlocking boulders, its horn can shatter walls, and its breath has become truly devastating — a slurry of acid and mud that buries armies, and a petrifying dust that leaves entire battalions frozen in stone.
Its lairs are both treasure vaults and ossuaries, decorated not with coins, but with ore veins, gemstones, and petrified victims. Adventurers often find their predecessors still standing — frozen in poses of terror.
Unlike many dragons, Stone Dragons are not cruel — but they are implacable. To them, mortals are trespassers in the eternal dominion of stone, and their wrath is as inevitable as an avalanche.
Lair and Lair Actions
Lair of the Adult Stone Dragon
The Shattered Vault
The Stone Dragon makes its lair in a colossal cavern system deep in the mountains or Underdark. These caverns are riddled with acidic mud pits, statues of petrified victims, and veins of glittering gemstones that the dragon claims instead of gold. Stalactites hang like teeth from the cavern ceiling, and the air is thick with a choking haze of dust and steam from the acidic pools.
The lair feels less like a home and more like a living tomb, decorated with the dragon’s victims and defended by shifting tunnels that collapse or open at its will.
Terrain Features
-
Petrified Forest of Statues. Victims of the dragon’s petrifying breath weapon stand frozen in combat poses across the cavern, creating both cover and hazards. Striking one risks shattering it into dangerous stone shards.
-
Acid Pools. Pits of bubbling green mud glow faintly in the darkness, dealing acid damage (6d6 per round) to anything that falls inside.
-
Gemstone Veins. Glittering veins of crystals and ore line the walls. Some glow faintly, providing eerie, uneven lighting.
-
Collapsing Tunnels. The dragon can deliberately collapse sections of its lair, trapping intruders or cutting off retreat.
Lair Actions
On initiative count 20 (losing ties), the Stone Dragon can use one of the following effects:
-
Mud Eruption. A pool of acidic mud erupts in a 20 ft. radius within 120 ft. Each creature must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity save or take 27 (6d8) acid damage and be knocked prone.
-
Stone Shatter. The dragon causes stalactites or stone pillars to collapse within 60 ft. of it. Each creature in a 20 ft. radius must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity save or take 31 (7d8) bludgeoning damage.
-
Dust Cloud. The dragon stirs up a choking dust storm in a 30 ft. radius. The area becomes heavily obscured until the next initiative count 20, and creatures inside must make a DC 20 Constitution save or be blinded until the end of their next turn.
Regional Effects
The land within 6 miles of an Adult Stone Dragon’s lair is warped by its presence:
-
Statues in Stone. Victims turned to stone by the dragon litter the surrounding tunnels, silent warnings of its power.
-
Acid Springs. Natural springs bubble up as acidic mud pits, burning away plant life and filling the air with foul vapors.
-
Unstable Stone. Earthquakes ripple through the region. Caverns collapse without warning, and mountaintops crumble into rockslides.
-
Stone’s Watch. Travelers often feel the dragon’s gaze. Echoes of footsteps and dust clouds appear where none should, as if the stone itself spies for the dragon.
If the dragon dies, the lair destabilizes. Acid pools cool into inert mud, petrified statues crumble into rubble, and the caverns collapse over decades, burying the Shattered Vault beneath stone.
