Description
Andrewsarchus was a gigantic mammalian carnivore from the Middle Eocene epoch, about 45-36 million years ago in Mongolia. Only its massive skull has been found, making full size estimates inferential; however, it is believed to have been about 6 feet high at the shoulder, 11-12 feet long, and weighed around 2,000 pounds (1 ton), making it the largest known land-dwelling mammalian predator. It had a large, powerful skull with sharp, bone-crushing teeth, and was likely a scavenger and omnivore, not a purely terrestrial predator. Andrewsarchus is closely related to hippos and whales, as a member of the artiodactyls.
