Description
The Anubees are grotesque carrion‑bees, warped monstrosities that thrive on rot and death. Unlike natural bees, they do not gather nectar from flowers. Instead, they swarm over corpses, battlefield remains, and even living prey, dissolving flesh with acidic saliva and carrying it back to their hive. There, the meat is fermented into a reddish‑black honey with a metallic tang—the same substance used to brew Osiris’ Mead.
Their bodies are a nightmarish fusion of insect and corpse:
• Compound eyes that glisten like pools of coagulated blood.
• Mandibles serrated like bone saws, dripping with acidic saliva.
• Abdomens swollen and translucent, pulsing with the slurry of half‑digested meat.
• Wings that buzz with a low, funereal drone, vibrating the air like a dirge.
When they fly, they carry the stench of decay with them, and their hives echo with the sound of thousands of wings beating in unison—a sound like a swarm of flies magnified to cathedral volume.
Behavior
• Predatory Scavengers: They prefer carrion but will abduct the living, paralyzing them and cocooning them in waxy resin to be slowly digested.
• Hive‑Minded: Each drone is linked to the Hive Queen, acting as her eyes and ears.
• Meat Alchemy: Their honey is not sweet—it is metallic, coppery, and faintly acidic. Drinking it induces vivid dreams of death and decay.
Horror Elements
• Cocoons: Victims are sealed alive in waxy resin, slowly drained of fluids until only husks remain.
• Honeycombs: Instead of golden wax, their combs are made of reddish, meat‑wax resin, dripping with blood‑tinged honey.
• Buzzing Voices: When near the hive, the droning of their wings sometimes resolves into whispers—echoes of the dead they’ve consumed.
FOR DM: “The air grows thick with a low, droning hum. From the shadows, a shape emerges—its body plated in blackened chitin, its abdomen swollen and translucent, pulsing with something that sloshes inside. Its mandibles click wetly, dripping with a metallic‑smelling fluid. As its wings beat, the sound vibrates in your chest like a funeral dirge, and the stench of rot rolls over you in waves. This is no natural insect—this is a carrion‑bee, a parasite of the dead.”
