Traits

Demon Heart. Ashardalon explodes when he dies. Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 25, each creature in a 30-foot Emanation originating from Ashardalon. Failure: 31 (9d6) Fire damage plus 31 (9d6) Force damage

Legendary Resistance (4/Day, or 5/Day in Lair). If Ashardalon fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Regeneration. Ashardalon regains 25 Hit Points at the start of each of his turns. If Ashardalon takes Necrotic damage, this trait doesn't function on Ashardalon's next turn. Ashardalon dies only if it starts its turn with 0 Hit Points and doesn't regenerate.

Actions

Multiattack. Ashardalon makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks. Ashardalon can replace his Bite attack with a use of Spellcasting to cast Scorching Ray (level 4 version).

Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +18, reach 15 ft. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) Piercing damage plus 13 (2d12) Fire damage.

Claw. Melee Attack Roll: +18, reach 10 ft. Hit: 19 (2d8 + 10) Slashing damage, and the target has the Grappled condition. While Grappled, the target has the Restrained condition. Ashardalon can have only one creature Grappled this way at a time.

Fire Breath (Recharge 5–6). Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 25, each creature in a 120-foot Cone. Failure: 105 (30d6) Fire damage, and the target is Burning. Success: Half damage.

Spellcasting. Ashardalon casts one of the following spells, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 25, +17 to hit with spell attacks):

At Will: Command (level 3 version), Detect Magic, Scorching Ray (level 4 version)
3/Day Each: Dominate Monster, Fireball (level 6 version), Scrying
1/Day: Plane Shift

Legendary Actions

Legendary Action Uses: 3 (4 in Lair). Immediately after another creature’s turn, Ashardalon can expend a use to take one of the following actions. Ashardalon regains all expended uses at the start of each of his turns.

Abyssal Storm. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 25, each creature in a 30-foot Emanation originating from Ashardalon. Failure: 27 (6d8) Lightning damage, and the target has the Shocked condition. Success: Half damage only. Failure or Success: Ashardalon can't take this action again until the start of his next turn.

Pounce. Ashardalon moves up to half his Speed, and he makes one Claw attack.

Spell Work. Ashardalon uses Spellcasting to cast Command (level 3 version), Dominate Monster (if available), or Scorching Ray (level 4 version). Ashardalon can’t take this action again until the start of its next turn.

Description

Ashardalon is a red dragon greatwyrm and a legend across the many words of the Material Plane. He is ancient, at least 1,600 years, and has spent centuries within the Astral Plane and his lair, the Bastion of Unborn Souls. Several centuries ago, Ashardalon was mortally wounded; to prevent his death, he tore out his heart and replaced it with the Balor, Ammet, the Eater of Souls, binding the demon to serve as his new heart. Ashardalon is obsessed with eternal life and godhood. To achieve these goals, he commands a secretive cult and occasionally makes attacks across the Material plane to seek out artifacts and forbidden knowledge.

New Condition: Shocked

A Shocked creature or object takes 1 Lightning damage at the start of each of its turns and can't make Opportunity Attacks. As an Action, you can ground yourself by giving yourself the Prone condition until the start of your next turn, ending the condition.

Lair and Lair Actions

Ashardalon's Lair

The Bastion of Unborn Souls is a poorly understood demiplane within the Astral Plane, and perhaps a relic of one of the many dead deities that float amongst the Astral Plane. Within the Bastion, raw life energy and soul stuff flows, at its center lies a font from which all of its flows; this is where Ashardalon spends most of his  time bathed in this stream of energy. This energy is rejuvenating and is capable of restoring even the most severe ailments, even those caused by deities.

Within  the Bastion, trees made of crystal formation grow and shimmer like brilliant opals. When the fruits that form on them ripen, they float away and reincarnate as creatures in the likeness of the Bastion's master; currently they form as draconic creatures such as Half-Dragons, Kobolds, Dragonborn, Drakes, and Red Dragons.

The Bastion of Unborn Souls is on the Astral Plane, and has all the properties and effects of that place. The vicinity of the Bastian also has the following effects:

Divine Health. Creatures on the Astral Plane don't age or suffer from hunger or thirst. Additionally, creatures within 6 miles of the Bastion are Immune to the Poisoned and Exhaustion conditions, and can't have their Hit Point maximum reduced.

Healing Surge. Within 1 mile of the bastion, characters can heal themselves even faster. As a Magic action, a character can use a healing surge and spend up to half its Hit Dice. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the creature rolls the die and adds the creature's Constitution modifier. The character regains Hit Points equal to the total. The creature can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character who uses a Healing Surge can't do so again until he or she finishes a short or long rest.

Rapid Recovery. Within 6 miles of the Bastion, resting restores more vitality. With a Short Rest, a character regains Hit Dice equal to their level divided by four (minimum of one die).

The Bastion is a permanent fixture of the Astral Plane, and these effects remain whether or not Ashardalon is present.
