Legendary Resistance (2/Day). If the Astalos fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Membrane Charge. The Astalos will gradually charge itself via piezoelectricity as it moves. After moving 40 feet the Astalos will gain a level of charge, adding 3(1d4+1) Lightning damage to its wingarm, tail, and bite attacks as well as unlocking several attacks. This charge adds the bonus up to 6 times for a 6th level charge. If the Astalos is hit by an attack which deals Lightning damage, roll for the damage. The Astalos gains one level of charge for every 9 points of damage the attack deals, to a maximum of 3 levels from one attack.
Diving Pin. If the Astalos flies 20 feet or more towards a target, it can perform a Wingarm attack with advantage. On a hit the target becomes grappled in the Astalos's Wingarm. This also occurs if the Astalos performs a Wingarm attack on any airborne target, which will send the target and the Astalos to the ground. The target will take 3 (1d6) Bludgeoning damage for every 5 feet they are sent to the ground and the Astalos will take 0 falling damage.
Multiattack. The Astalos performs two Wingarm attacks.
Wingarm. Melee Attack Roll: +8 , reach 10 ft. Hit: 15 (1d8 +11) Slashing damage.
Tail. Melee Attack Roll: +7 , reach 5 ft. Hit: 20 (1d8 + 16) Slashing damage. Any target hit by this attack must succeed a DC-17 Strength check or become Grappled. The target can roll to escape at the end of their turn. (Escape DC-18 Strength). While grappled the Astalos can perform a Tail attack with advantage as a bonus action on the grappled target or take the Fling Bonus Action.
Charge-Based Actions:
Lightning Stake (2 charge levels). The Astalos stabs its tail into the ground, conducting forcing an immense amount of electricity into the ground. Any creatures within a 10 foot radius of the Astalos must succeed a DC-15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 25 (4d8 + 9) Lightning damage and being knocked prone on a failed save or taking half as much damage and not being knocked prone on a successful save.
Tail Bolt (2 charge levels). The astalos releases a bolt of electricity from its tail in a 20 foot long, 5 foot wide line. Each creature in that line must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 12 (2d8 + 4) Lightning damage and being Paralyzed for 1 turn on a failed save, or taking half as much damage and not being paralyzed on a successful save. on a successful one. If a target is grappled by the tail when the Astalos performs this move they must instead roll the escape DC, being hit on the failed save.
Electric Blade (3 charge levels). A blade-like shape made entirely of electricity extends out from the Astalos' horn before striking the ground in a 35-foot line that is 5 feet wide. Each creature in that line must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d10 + 2) Lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Divebomb (6 charge levels). The Astalos flies 60 feet into the air and roars, before crashing into any area within 80 feet of it. Any creature in a 25 foot radius of the impact site must succeed a DC-17 Constitution saving throw, taking 48 (8d8 + 12) Lightning damage and being knocked prone on a failed save, or taking half as much damage and not being knocked prone on a successful save.
Fling. If a target is grappled in the Astalos's tail, it can take this reaction to throw the target 10-60 feet (Roll 1d6 and multiply by 10). The target will take 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage for every 5 feet it is thrown.
Roadrash. If a target is grappled in the Astalos's wingarms, it can take this reaction to violently drag the target across the ground before throwing them 10 feet in any direction. The target takes 15 (2d8 + 7) Bludgeoning damage for the roadrash and then 6 (2d6) Bludgeoning damage from the fling.
The Fireblitz Astalos can take 4 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Astalos regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Attack. The Astalos makes one Tail attack.
Move. The Astalos moves up to its walking speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Charge (Costs 2 Actions). The Astalos vibrates its muscles aggressively, gaining a level of charge.
Chaotic Storm (Costs 2 Actions, 1 Charge Level). The Astalos unleashes a violent expulsion of eletric energy in a 30 foot Cone in front of itself. All creatures within the area must make a DC-18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 (rollable](3d6 + 5);{"diceNotation":"3d6+5", "rollType":"damage", "rollAction":"Chaotic Storm", "rollDamageType":"Lightning"}[/rollable] Lightning damage and being knocked prone on a failed save or taking half as much damage only on a successful save.
Description
As large Flying Wyverns, Astalos share many physiological traits with other monsters in this classification. They possess two front limbs that are modified into wings and a pair of hind legs that serve for walking on land, as well as a long tail. However, there are a few characteristics that make Astalos quite unusual among the Flying Wyvern. For one, their armored shell is heavily segmented, covering the entire body with virtually no gaps. It is also covered in spikes and spines, to the point that even gently touching a shell segment can inflict injury. This unique shell structure gives Astalos an appearance that has been likened to that of Neopterons
The most striking trait of Astalos is their sophisticated electrical generation mechanism. All across their bodies, these wyverns possess structures that can contract and expand rapidly. This includes the large foldable head crest, the wings and the forked tail tip. These structures collectively form a piezoelectric organ and can produce an electric charge by vibrating at high frequencies. The produced charge is extremely potent and can instantly electrocute smaller animals to death. While all the various moving body features contribute to the charge, it is believed that the odd head crest of Astalos is the centerpiece of the mechanism, as it has been found to contain numerous specialized tissues that manipulate electric currents. The crest is also formed around a massive muscle, the activity of which is also believed to play a key role in maintaining a generated charge.
The presence of this powerful charge defines many of the Astalos' other body structures. The armor shell is, in addition to the aforementioned qualities, also extremely resistant to electricity, likely to protect the internal organs of the wyvern from the currents produced by the external power generators. It has however been noted that once an Astalos' body reaches a certain charge threshold, the elemental resistance of the armor shell decreases dramatically.
The wings are also affected by the Astalos' charge. The numerous sharp wingtalons of the wyvern are usually black like the shell, but turn increasingly green as a charge is generated and amplified. They seem to wear down quickly and must be groomed repeatedly to maintain their shape. The wing membranes meanwhile are semi-translucent and take on a vibrant rainbow-like color as electric currents surge through them. They seem to be able to store electric charges for extended periods of time, as they are known to retain electricity even after they've been cut off from an Astalos' body.
In addition to also holding and amplifying the wyvern's charge, the tail tips of Astalos also produce a paralyzing toxin that can be administered through contact with the many jagged spines inside the scissor-like structure.
