If the giant tabanid is mounted, it must make a DC 12 STR check to use evasive flight each time it is attacked.
Keen Sight. The giant tabanid has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
The giant tabanid can detach itself by spending 5 feet of its movement. It does so after it drains 30 hit points of blood from the target or the target dies. A creature, including the target, can use its action to detach the giant tabanid by succeeding on a DC 13 Strength check.
Vomit. Ranged Attack Roll. +5 to hit, range 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d10 + 1) Acid damage.
If a giant tabanid is using Blood Drain and successfully uses Dodging Flight it automatically detaches itself from its victim before flying away.
Description
The giant tabanid (colloquially known as the giant horsefly) is a flying insect about the size of a pony that has been domesticated and used by the duergar as a mount. Its origins are unknown - whether it was somehow bred or created by some permanent size-altering magic.
It is a stocky well-built fly, generally dark grey or black with large multifaceted green eyes. They are surprisingly agile and adept flyers, despite their size. Like their tiny ancestors, they live in marshes and swamps, both above ground and underground.
(Originally appeared in Monster Manual II (1983) by Gary Gygax.)
