Spellcasting. Vaelix is a 6-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is [Intelligence] (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). Vaelix has following spells prepared:

Psionic Aptitude (Recharge 5–6).
Once per short rest, Vaelix can use one of the following abilities:

  • Mind Spike (Psionic). One creature he can see within 60 ft. must make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or take 4d8 psychic damage and cannot benefit from invisibility for 1 minute.

  • Neural Distraction. As a bonus action, Vaelix distorts the perceptions of one creature within 30 ft. They have disadvantage on their next Wisdom saving throw or Insight check within 1 minute.

Ring of Invisibility (Recharge after Long Rest).
Wearing a Ring of Invisibility, Vaelix can become invisible (as per the spell) at will for up to 1 hour per day, divided into increments as he chooses. The invisibility ends if he attacks or casts a spell.

Master of Lies.
Vaelix has advantage on Deception checks and on saving throws to avoid having his thoughts read (e.g., by Detect Thoughts).

Far-Touched Knowledge.
When Vaelix makes an Arcana or History check about the Far Realm or planar phenomena, he can add double his proficiency bonus.

Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 60 ft., one creature.
Hit: 2d6 psychic damage, and the target subtracts 1d4 from the next saving throw it makes before the end of Vaelix’s next turn.

Description

Vaelix Thorne once walked among scholars and sages of the Sword Coast, an acclaimed archaeologist known for his work on Netherese ruins and planar anomalies. But fame is fleeting, and gold even more so. In his hunger for forbidden lore and the next great dig site, he took contracts from questionable patrons — until one day, a request came from someone... or something, far more ancient and dangerous.

Qunbraxel, a mind flayer with designs upon the shattered obelisk and its power, needed someone clever enough to navigate crumbling ruins, decode mad inscriptions, and stay alive among the horrors of the Underdark. Vaelix accepted — for a price. Now, equipped with a Ring of Invisibility and dark whispers echoing in his mind, Vaelix sneaks through the deepest reaches of Gibbet Crossing. He documents, translates, steals, and lies — all while secretly preparing to sell the secrets of the obelisk to whichever entity pays the most.

 

Personality Dry wit, self-serving, but always polite. Constantly gauging how much people know. Master of half-truths.
Voice Calm, low, always slightly amused. May trail off as if talking to someone only he can hear.
Mannerisms Fidgets with a stylus or pocket journal. Avoids direct answers. Often quotes ancient texts to sound more credible.
Quirks Sometimes murmurs to himself in Deep Speech. Uses long-forgotten names for things (“The Shard of Twilight” instead of “Obelisk fragment”).
Goal Collect and sell knowledge about the Obelisk Shards to the highest bidder. Possibly betray Qunbraxel if it's more profitable.
Fear Being mentally dominated by Qunbraxel, or permanently changed by the Far Realm's touch.
