Traits

Absorbent Coat.
A Nerf’s sponge-like fleece soaks up liquids readily. It can absorb up to 5 gallons of liquid before becoming saturated. While soaked, the Nerf has disadvantage on Dexterity checks but gains resistance to fire damage.

Squish and Puff.
As an action, a soaked Nerf can squeeze itself dry, expelling all absorbed liquid in a 5-foot radius. Creatures in the area must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or be splashed and lightly pushed 5 feet away.

Docile Temperament.
Nerfs are naturally non-aggressive. If attacked, they bleat mournfully and attempt to flee; they never make opportunity attacks.

Harvestable Material.
Once per month, a Nerf can be safely “shorn,” producing 1d4 natural sponges that dry to become prized for cleaning, potion filtration, and even spell components.

Actions

Bump. Melee Attack Roll: +2, reach 5 ft. Hit: 1 Bludgeoning damage, or 2 (1d4) Bludgeoning damage*
(Used only to nudge, not harm — usually to demand food or affection.)

Description

Nerfs are fluffy, rotund grazers bred in damp meadows and coastal marshes. Their “wool” isn’t fiber at all but a dense, porous matrix of organic sponge. When rain falls, Nerfs wander into puddles and bogs to soak it in, filtering minerals and plankton for nourishment.

Villagers harvest Nerf sponge carefully, drying and cutting it for use in alchemy and daily cleaning. In many towns, “Don’t squeeze the Nerf” is a proverb warning against overusing a resource.

Taverns sometimes keep a single Nerf near the hearth to absorb ale spills; druidic circles revere herds of wild Nerfs as living filters that purify streams.

Nerf Ecology Sidebar:
When startled, a herd of Nerfs emits a chorus of squeaky “puff” sounds, releasing mist and scattering droplets — an event locals call “the Foam.” Adventurers who witness it are said to receive good luck in finding inns with clean sheets for a tenday.
