Traits

Voidsteel Captain’s Armor.
The Captain’s armor grants resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage. Once per short rest, the Captain can channel the armor’s internal etheric field to gain temporary hit points equal to 20 (4d10).

Aura of Command (30 ft.).
Allied Astral Corsairs and Sirens within 30 ft. gain +2 to attack rolls and saving throws against fear effects. The Captain and allies under this aura can communicate telepathically while aboard the same ship or planar vessel.

Legend of the Void.
The Captain has advantage on Charisma checks made against other pirates, mercenaries, or planar travelers. They are known — even across planes.

Born to the Helm.
The Captain cannot be charmed or frightened while aboard a ship. As a bonus action, they can issue one of the following Orders to any ally within 30 feet that can hear them:

  • “Fire the Guns!” — The ally immediately makes one ranged attack as a reaction.

  • “Hold the Line!” — The ally gains +2 AC until the start of the Captain’s next turn.

  • “Board Them!” — The ally can move up to half their speed toward an enemy without provoking opportunity attacks.

Actions

Multiattack. The Captain makes three attacks with their Void Cutlass or Hand Cannon.

Void Cutlass. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 3) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) force damage.

Captain’s Hand Cannon. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 40/120 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d8 + 2) fire or radiant damage.

Astral Broadside (Recharge 5–6). The Captain channels ship-bound ether through their weaponry, releasing a planar blast in a 30-foot cone. All creatures in the area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) force damage on a failed save or half as much on a success.

Mark of Command (1/day). The Captain chooses one creature within 60 feet. Until the end of the Captain’s next turn, all allies have advantage on attack rolls against that target.

Description

Lore

Every Corsair fleet that sails the Astral tides has a captain — but few earn the title Captain of the Sea Between Stars.
The Astral Corsair Captain is both warlord and wanderer, steering their spelljamming vessel through cosmic storms and into the hearts of planar wars. Their loyalty is not to gold or god, but to freedom and legacy — to the idea that the Astral Sea belongs to none but those brave enough to take it.

Their armor is ceremonial yet battle-scarred, blending ornate voidsteel plating with rich pirate garb: crimson sashes, astral maps stitched into their coat lining, and a captain’s hat adorned with the sigils of conquered ships. Their voice carries across the deck like thunder — their charisma as cutting as their blade.

They command through a code, not law — a pact of loyalty, coin, and shared risk. To their crew, they are both judge and guardian; to their enemies, a phantom admiral whose banner spells doom.

Equipment

  • Voidsteel Captain’s Armor (half-plate)

  • Void Cutlass (enchanted longsword)

  • Hand Cannon (radiant firearm)

  • Astral Compass (navigational relic attuned to planar currents)

  • Captain’s Seal — an insignia that marks their ship and authority

Personality

  • Motto: “The Sea listens to no master — only to courage.”

  • Personality Trait: Calm under cannonfire, but wrathful when betrayed.

  • Ideal: Freedom — no king nor god shall command the stars.

  • Bond: Their ship and crew are their soul; they would burn the heavens for them.

  • Flaw: Pride is their compass — and it never points home.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Astral Captain offers to ferry the party across the planes, but in exchange, demands aid in reclaiming a mutinied ship.

  • A dying Corsair whispers a name — the Captain who united the fleets, now lost to a strange rift beyond the Silver Horizon.

  • The PCs cross paths with the Captain’s ship — The Black Halo — and find themselves pressed into service during a raid on a celestial convoy.
