Description

American Lions are an extinct relative of lions inhabiting areas from southern Canada down to Mexico. They were one of the largest cats to ever exist, averaging around 5-8 ft in length and weighing 518-1153 pounds for males and 386-805 pounds for females. It had longer and more robust limbs than modern lions proportional to body size and preferred large prey like ungulates and mammoths. They are more comparable to brown bears than to African lions in strength and size. They are less common than other predators in tar pits, leading to a belief that they were potentially more intelligent than contemporaries like dire wolves and Smilodon. They are estimated to have had a bite force of 2,830 newtons, which is almost 3 times the 650-1000 newtons of African lions.
