Legendary Resistance (5/Day). If Alvarez fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Magic Resistance. Alvarez has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
He speaks only truth. While Alvarez is within the Torturous Truth, he is unaffected by Counterspell.
Lord of the Torturous Truth. While Alvares is within the Torturous Truth, all magical items carried or equipped by creatures other than Alvares' allies cease to function and work as non-magical versions. Also, the Torturous Truth cannot break free of the Abyss, and the realm's alignment cannot exceed +50.
Multiattack. Alvarez makes two Soul-Cleave attacks, or casts Infernal Orb twice.
Soul Cleave. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 10 ft., two targets. Hit: 36 (8d6 + 10) slashing damage. If the target is a creature with a moral alignment, it takes one Soul Counter. Increase the damage taken by Soul Cleave by 5 for each Soul Counter on the target.
Infernal Orb. Alvarez hurls a magical ball of fire that explodes at a point it can see within 120 feet of it. Each creature in a 20-foot radius sphere centered on that point must make a DC22 Dexterity saving throw. The sphere spreads around corners. A creature takes 35 (10d6) Fire damage and 35 (10d6) damage of Alvarez' choice of lightning, necrotic, acid or cold damage. Alvarez cannot chose the same damage type twice in the same turn. A creature that fails the saving throw gains 1 Soul Counter.
Reckless. Alvarez takes a legendary action as a bonus action.
Charge. Alvarez takes the Dash action. He cannot do this if he used Infernal Orb this turn.
All fiends have their purpose. Alvarez kills a fiend with less than 20 hitpoints that he can see within 120 feet. He heals for the amount of hitpoints that fiend had left.
Backhand. Alvarez reacts to a melee attack he is hit by. Melee Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d6 + 10) bludgeoning damage. If this attack hits, the target is knocked back 20 feet.
Alvarez can take 5 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Alvarez regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
Backhand. Alvarez makes one backhand attack.
Soul Cleave. Alvarez makes one Soul Cleave attack. He cannot use this ability again until the beginning of his next turn.
Indominable. Alvarez breaks free of any cause of the Restrained, Incapacitated, Stunned, Paralyzed, Prone, or Charmed conditions, or any effects that would cause it to be unable to use its actions, bonus actions or reactions.
Think about what you've done (Costs 2 Actions). Alvarez casts Banishment on a single target (DC 22), sending the target to a prison within the Torturous Truth instead of their home plane of existence. He does not need to maintain concentration on the spell, but the target can remake the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, and the escape DC is reduced by 1 for every 10 points of damage Alvarez took since the spell was cast. Alvarez can banish up to 3 creatures at a time. A creature that is banished loses all Soul Counters.
Lair and Lair Actions
Alvarez is the master of the Torturous Truth, a realm of the Abyss that hangs precariously on the brink of undergoing Celestial Realignment and being spun off towards the upper planes.
- No fiend can call the Torturous Truth their home.
- Non-fiend creatures bound to the Truth cannot leave by any means, even unwillingly, any spells that would cause this automatically fail. As a non-fiend, anyone else can become bound by one of three ways:
- They are bound there by a four-hour ritual conducted by Alvarez himself.
- They willingly take the place of another good-natured creature already bound there. The act must be consensual both ways - that is, the person already bound to the Truth can refuse.
- They show up and willingly call the Truth their home.
- Any time a good-natured creature is bound to the Torturous Truth, their soul adds to the pull of the realm away from the Abyss, increasing its Alignment score by their level or challenge rating.
- The Truth acts more like the faewild than an outer plane in that Good-natured creatures who are bound to the Truth cannot die - at least, not permanently. They are immortal, like fae or celestials. Every time such a creature dies, their soul lingers in the plane, pulling it further away from the Abyss equal to half their level or challenge rating. They lose a small piece of themselves in the process, however, so they will eventually fade into nothingness after 20 such resurrections.
- Any fiend physically present in the Truth, by their very nature, pulls the realm closer to the Abyss, decreasing the Alignment score by their level or challenge rating. Alvarez, Malix, Auxum. Nathrael and Tiamat each decrease the Alignment score by 50, and prevent the realm's alignment from rising above 50.
- Any good-natured creature successfully convinced to renounce their nature by torturing and destroying someone they love will become a fiend, which reduces the realm's alignment by their level or challenge rating.
- If any fiend dies in the Truth, their souls are absorbed by the plane, and they die permanently, reducing the realm's alignment by their level or challenge rating.
The Torturous Truth's alignment currently sits at -200. Non-evil creatures bound into the Torturous Truth experience these effects:
- All d20 checks they make are modified by the alignment score divided by 10, noting the sign of the score (so a negative score detracts from d20 checks).
- All damage they take is modified by the alignment score divided by 10, with inverted sign (so a negative score increases damage, while a positive score reduces it).
In addition, characters can become afflicted by Soul Counters due to some of Alvarez' attacks and abilities. Aside from increasing the damage received by Soul Cleave, a creature with 3 Soul Counters takes on a neutral alignment, a creature with 6 such counters takes on an evil alignment, and a creature with 9 such counters permanently becomes a fiend under Alvarez' control. Creatures who are already fiends cannot gain Soul Counters. Greater Restoration will remove all Soul Counters on a creature.
