Living Omen. The Ash-Wraith Lion is not truly alive. When reduced to 0 hit points, it dissolves into warm ash and disappears, leaving behind a Lion's Ember-Tooth (a minor magic token that sheds dim warm light for 10 feet and is used in Lion-themed rites.
Molten Footprints. Where the Lion moves, it leaves faint glowing pawprints that remain warm for 1 minute. A creature that starts its turn in a space with these prints takes 3(1 d6) fire damage unless it succeeds on a DC 14 Dex save.
Burning Mirage. Creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to spot the Ash-Wraith Lion beyond 30 feet because its form blurs in wavering heat.
Sun-Spirit Mind. The Lion cannot be controlled, possessed, or magically charmed. Effects that would influence its mind instead cause it to unleash a Roar of Embers at the end of its next turn.
Multiattack. The Lion makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage plus 4 [rollable](1d8) fire damage.
Claws. Melee weapon attack: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 12 (2d6+4) slashing damage plus 4 [rollable](1d8) fire damage.
Roar of Embers (Recharge 5-6). The Lion releases a roar like a blast furnace igniting. Creatures of its choice within 20 feet must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, take 18 [rollable](4d8) fire damage and are blinded by swirling ash until the end of their next turn. On a success, they take half damage and are not blinded.
Spirit Lunge. Once per turn, when the Lion moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and hits it with a claw attack, the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone, and the Lion may move an additional 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
Flarestep (Recharges on a Short or Long Rest). When the Lion would be hit by an attack, it may burst into a cloud of ash and reappear in an unoccupied space up to 30 feet away. The triggering attack misses, and the space it appears in becomes wreathed in radiant heat (Creatures entering or starting their turn there take 4 [rollable](1d8) fire damage).
Description
The Ash-Wraith Lion does not fight to kill. It tests courage by roaring, circling, and challenging. It retreats if the party shows bravery or refuses to strike a fallen ally. It grows hostile only if threatened, harmed.
