Description
Appearance
Aetherdrakes are elegant, sky-touched dragons whose bodies look like they were carved from clouds and lightning. Their scales are white and pearl-like, shimmering faintly when they move. Along their neck and spine grow golden spikes that glow softly during storms, almost like lanterns flickering in the wind. A single lightning-blue stripe runs from the top of their head down to the tail, glowing brighter whenever the dragon channels electricity.
Their eyes are typically soft gold or silver, and their bodies are built for graceful, swift flight. Even the air around them hums gently with static, as if the sky itself recognizes them.
History
Aetherdrakes are believed to be one of the world’s oldest dragon species. According to elvish legend, they were formed during the first great storms of creation, when lightning met the high clouds with such force that life sparked into being. These dragons were never conquerors; instead, they served as quiet guardians of natural magic and storm-born energy.
Long ago, an unnamed ancient threat began to hunt Aetherdrakes for their powerful magical essence. This event nearly wiped them out, and today only a handful remain. Most people believe they are extinct or mythical.
Cygnus — the legendary guardian of Ellesserin — is one of the last known adults. Her disappearance centuries ago left the world without a protector of the Aetherdrake line… until a single egg was discovered, proving the species still lives.
Behavior
Aetherdrakes are intelligent, peaceful, and deeply connected to nature. They avoid unnecessary conflict and prefer to observe rather than interfere. They speak rarely, and when they do, their voices sound like distant thunder and wind.
Their main behaviors include:
• Guardianship: They watch over places of strong magic, storm energy, or ancient forests.
• Weather Sensitivity: They can sense incoming storms long before they form.
• Curiosity: Younger Aetherdrakes are playful, inquisitive, and easily fascinated by mortals.
• Balancekeepers: They avoid politics but will protect the natural world when it is threatened.
Aetherdrakes form strong emotional bonds — especially with those they deem kind-hearted or connected to the natural world. A bonded Aetherdrake is loyal for life, acting as both companion and gentle protector.
