Living Bombardment. Bazelgeuse’s body constantly sheds volatile explosive scales. At the end of each of its turns, one unoccupied space of its choice within 20 feet becomes primed with an explosive scale. The scale detonates at the start of Bazelgeuse’s next turn or when a creature enters its space.
-
Explosion: DC 18 Dexterity save, taking 21 (6d6) fire damage and 21 (6d6) thunder damage on a failure, or half on a success.
Aerial Menace. While flying, Bazelgeuse has advantage on attack rolls against creatures that are prone or Large or smaller and not flying.
Siege Monster. Bazelgeuse deals double damage to objects and structures.
Relentless Bomber. Difficult terrain and nonmagical environmental hazards do not reduce Bazelgeuse’s movement.
Multiattack. Bazelgeuse makes three attacks: one with its Bite and two with its Talons, or two Bombing Run attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 27 (3d12 + 8) piercing damage.
Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 23 (3d10 + 8) slashing damage.
Bombing Run. Bazelgeuse flies up to half its flying speed in a straight line. Any number of points along the path become explosive scale drop zones (up to 5). Each creature within 10 feet of a drop zone must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) fire damage plus 28 (8d6) thunder damage on a failure, or half on a success.
Scale Flare (Recharge 5–6). Bazelgeuse violently shakes its body, immediately detonating all explosive scales within 30 feet. Creatures caught in multiple explosions are affected only once but take an extra 14 (4d6) fire damage.
Detonation Reflex. When Bazelgeuse takes 30 or more damage from a single source, one explosive scale within 15 feet immediately detonates.
Bazelgeuse can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn.
Wing Buffet. Bazelgeuse beats its wings. Each creature within 15 feet must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone and pushed 10 feet.
Scale Drop. Bazelgeuse sheds an explosive scale in a space it can see within 30 feet.
Dive Bomb (Costs 2 Actions). Bazelgeuse moves up to its flying speed and makes one Talons attack. Hit or miss, an explosive scale detonates in the target’s space.
Description
Bazelgeuse, known among scholars as the Crimson Rain Tyrant, is a roaming catastrophe rather than a territorial predator. These massive, dragon-like monstrosities wander vast distances, drawn not by lairs or hoards, but by conflict itself. Wherever wars rage, fortresses stand, or great beasts clash, Bazelgeuse is never far behind.
Its hide is covered in metallic, pinecone-like scales that grow unstable over time. When agitated—or simply in flight—these scales fall away and explode moments later with devastating force. Entire battlefields have been found scorched and cratered, with no survivors left to tell whether an army was destroyed by siege engines… or something far worse.
Unlike true dragons, Bazelgeuse possesses no innate malice or desire for domination. It is ecologically destructive, but not evil. Some druids believe it plays a grim role in the natural order, culling overpopulation and ending prolonged wars by annihilating both sides indiscriminately.
Legends tell of generals who believed the thunderous roars overhead signaled divine judgment. Others whisper that Bazelgeuse follows the scent of blood and smoke across continents, an omen that no conflict—no matter how small—goes unnoticed.
To face Bazelgeuse is not merely to fight a monster. It is to survive a living siege.
