Traits

Immutable Form. Valerica is immune to any spell or effect that would alter her form.

Divine Inviolability (Angel Trait). All Fiends, Undead, and all non-Good-Aligned Characters cannot hit Valerica with attacks. Constructs and other Angels ignore this effect.

Aura of Illumination and Dispelling (Angel Trait). Valerica emits an aura of holy light in a 60-foot radius. This light dispels all magical darkness, invisibility, and illusions within the area automatically.

Aura of Truth (Angel Trait). Valerica is surrounded by a 120-foot aura of absolute truth. No lie can be spoken within this radius. Creatures within the aura are aware of this effect.

Unbound Essence (Angel Trait). Valerica cannot be sealed away, trapped, or imprisoned by any magical or non-magical barriers, spells (such as Imprisonment or Forcecage), or means.

Sacred Union. At the end of a Long Rest, Valerica can choose one willing creature to be her "Beloved." As long as the Beloved is within 120 feet of Valerica, the Beloved gains immunity to the Charmed and Frightened conditions, gains resistance to Psychic damage, and regains 10 hit points at the start of each of their turns. Valerica can only have one Beloved at a time.

Magic Resistance. Valerica has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. Valerica makes two attacks with her Ethereal Ribbons or uses Spellcasting. She can replace one attack with Lover’s Embrace.

Ethereal Ribbons. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (4d6 + 6) force damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage. If the target is a creature, it is grappled (escape DC 24) by the chains of light shown in her image. Valerica can grapple up to two creatures at a time.

Lover’s Embrace. Valerica touches a willing creature (or her Beloved at a range of 30 feet). The target is washed in a euphoric, violet light that relieves all burdens. The target regains 55 (10d8 + 10) hit points. In addition, Valerica removes the following conditions from the target: Blinded, Deafened, Paralyzed, Poisoned, Stunned, and Petrified. If the target suffers from Exhaustion, one level of exhaustion is removed.

Kiss of Rapture (Recharge 5–6). Valerica kisses a creature or blows a kiss toward a target within 60 feet.

  • If the target is an Ally/Beloved: They are filled with supernatural vitality. They gain 50 temporary hit points, and until the end of their next turn, their attacks deal an extra 22 (4d10) radiant damage.

  • If the target is Hostile: They must make a DC 25 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, they take 55 (10d10) psychic damage and are Stunned until the end of their next turn, overwhelmed by the intensity of her presence.

Bonus Actions

Vow of Protection. Valerica targets her Beloved. Until the start of Valerica's next turn, any damage the Beloved takes is reduced by half, and the remaining damage is transferred to Valerica.

Beckoning Gaze. Valerica targets one creature she can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 25 Charisma saving throw or use its reaction to move its speed directly toward Valerica. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

Reactions

Interposing Grace. When an attacker that Valerica can see hits her Beloved with an attack, Valerica can teleport to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the Beloved and become the target of the attack instead.

Retributive Heart. When a creature deals damage to her Beloved, Valerica forces that creature to make a DC 25 Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes psychic damage equal to the damage they dealt to the Beloved.

Description

Here is the lore for Valerica and her kin, the Seraphim of Ardent Vows, integrated into official D&D cosmology.

The Lore of the Seraphim of Ardent Vows

Classification: Greater Celestial (Archetype: The Cordis Vincula) Home Plane: Arborea (The Realm of Passion) or Elysium (The Realm of Goodness) Patron Deities: Sune (Goddess of Love and Beauty), Ilmater (God of Endurance), or Hanali Celanil (Elven Goddess of Love).

The Origin: The Anchors of the Soul

In the cosmology of the Great Wheel, the Upper Planes are fueled by the Positive Energy Plane—the raw stuff of life and creation. However, raw positive energy is overwhelming; it burns as much as it heals. To channel this energy safely into the hearts of mortals who are suffering from the crushing despair of the Shadowfell or the corruption of the Abyss, the gods created the Seraphim of Ardent Vows.

These angels are known by celestial scholars as "Love Anchors."

While Solars are the generals of the gods and Planetars are their foot soldiers, the Seraphim of Ardent Vows serve a more subtle, yet vital purpose: Spiritual Tethering. They were designed to counteract the cosmic drift—the phenomenon where a hero's soul becomes so heavy with trauma, sin, and despair that they begin to drift toward the Lower Planes even while alive.

The Visuals: Ribbons of Fate

The violet ribbons and ethereal chains seen draped around Valerica (as depicted in your image) are not physical restraints. In D&D lore, these are manifestations of the Red String of Fate (a concept adopted in Kara-Tur mythos and generalized in planar lore).

These ribbons represent the bonds of loyalty, marriage, and sworn oaths. When Valerica uses her Ethereal Ribbons attack, she is literally weaponizing the weight of a promise. She binds enemies with the crushing guilt of their broken vows, while she binds her allies to her with the strengthening power of devotion.

The "Beloved" Pact

The defining trait of this angel is her need for a "Beloved." A Seraph of Ardent Vows is rarely sent to the Material Plane to lead an army. Instead, she is sent to save one specific soul who is vital to the cosmic balance but is on the verge of breaking.

When she chooses a mortal as her Beloved, she initiates a metaphysical bond known as the Sacrament of the Anchor.

  • The Purpose: The mortal acts as her grounding rod in the physical world, and in return, she acts as their infinite battery of emotional and physical vitality.

  • The Intimacy: This bond is inherently intimate. While it can be platonic (like the love between sworn battle-brothers), it is most powerful when it mimics the dynamic of a lover or spouse. The angel takes on an alluring, "lustful" form not to tempt the mortal into sin, but to awaken their Will to Live. In a universe full of undead who hate life, Valerica represents the intense, burning desire to be alive and to feel.

Relations to D&D Enemies

  • Succubi/Incubi: The Seraphim of Ardent Vows are the natural predators of Succubi. A Succubus drains a victim's soul through lust, leaving them empty. A Seraph fills a victim's soul through love, leaving them overflowing with vitality. A Succubus kiss kills; Valerica's Kiss of Rapture resurrects.

  • The Raven Queen: These angels often clash with the Raven Queen's Shadar-Kai. The Shadar-Kai embrace numbness and the gloom of the Shadowfell. Valerica represents vibrant, chaotic emotion, which is anathema to the Shadowfell's apathy.

Adventure Hook / Summoning Lore

It is said that a Seraph of Ardent Vows cannot be summoned by a simple spell like Planar Ally. She only answers a call when a Lawful Good hero makes a sacrifice out of pure love for another.

"She appeared not in a flash of blinding fire, but in a warm, violet haze that smelled of lavender and old parchment. She did not raise a sword. She simply wrapped her arms around the broken Paladin, and in that embrace, the wounds of a thousand battles closed. She whispered, 'I am your Anchor. You shall not drift into the dark while I hold you.'"Excerpt from the Libram of Exalted Deeds

Commentary & Lore

Roleplay & Personality: Valerica, visually depicted with violet hues and binding chains, represents the aspect of Devotion and Intimacy within the celestial hierarchy. She is not a warrior of the front lines, but a guardian of the heart. Her "lustful" or alluring appearance is not one of carnal sin, but of the overwhelming, intoxicating power of pure, unadulterated love and life force.

To her enemies, she is terrifyingly beautiful, a distraction that breaks the mind. To her allies, and specifically her chosen "Beloved," she is the ultimate source of comfort. When she speaks, her voice is like a warm whisper directly in the ear, promising safety and affection.

The "Beloved" Mechanic: This statblock is built around the Sacred Union trait. In a campaign, she would likely bond with a PC (most likely a Paladin, Cleric, or a character seeking redemption). She acts as a dedicated battery of health and buffing for that specific person.

Non-Combat Utility: Outside of battle, her Lover's Embrace is highly potent. It creates a roleplay scenario where a character who is traumatized, cursed, or exhausted seeks physical contact with her to be cleansed. She essentially functions as a living Greater Restoration and Heal spell, but requires intimacy and trust to function.

Habitat: Planar (Upper Planes)
