Water Strider. The bog strider can move across the surface of water as if it were solid ground and does not sink. It also gains a swim speed and can move across shallow reeds, mudflats, and marshy terrain without impediment.
Hold Breath. The bog strider can hold its breath for up to 10 minutes.
Tremor Tap. When standing on the surface of water (including frozen or vegetation-choked water), the bog strider emits subtle vibrations that only other creatures proficient with tremorsense can detect. Other bog striders within 60 feet that share this sense can perceive its location and general intent.
Multiattack. The bog strider makes two attacks: one with its spear and one with its mandibles
Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit (melee): 8 (1d8 + 4) piercing damage or Hit (ranged): 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage.
Mandibles. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d6 + 4) piercing damage.
Net (Recharge 5–6). Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, ranged 15/30 ft., one Large or smaller creature. Hit: The target is restrained (escape DC 12). The bog strider can use a bonus action to drag a restrained target up to 10 feet.
Water Sprint (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). Until the end of its turn, it can take the Dash action as a bonus action. While sprinting on water, it can move an additional distance up to its swim speed. After using this trait, the bog strider has disadvantage on Dexterity checks and saving throws until the end of its next turn, as it overexerts itself.
Water Reflexes. When a creature the bog strider can see enters water within 30 feet, the bog strider can move up to half its swim speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Description
Bog striders call themselves seshes and live primarily in swamps, marshes, and the edges of lakes and slow rivers. They resemble insectile humanoids with long spindly legs that let them traverse water surfaces as if walking on land. Their powerful mandibles and simple spears make them effective ambush hunters of fish, crustaceans, and unwary travelers.
Bog striders are territorial and cautious, using their ability to communicate via subtle water vibrations (tremor tap) to coordinate ambushes and warn kin of danger. While generally nonaggressive, they will defend their hunting grounds vigorously.
In combat, a bog strider uses its Water Sprint to close or disengage swiftly across water surfaces, then engages with its spear. It employs Net to restrain fleeing foes or to control the battlefield, then follows up with mandible attacks. When threatened from afar, it retreats into murky water to gain advantage from concealment and its Water Strider mobility.
