Traits

Immutable Purpose. The Watcher in Ash cannot be magically compelled, dominated, or forced to act against its charge. Effects that would control its actions instead fail automatically.

Oath-Bound Sentinel. The Watcher remains inert until a creature crosses the Inner Threshold. Upon activation, it speaks a single sentence: “State the danger you walk toward, not the glory you seek.”

Measured Judgment At the start of combat, the Watcher gains one of the following states:

  • Cautious Judgment:
The Watcher does not use Legendary Actions for the first round.
  • Severe Judgment:
The Watcher immediately uses Ashen Reprisal.

Ashen Form. When reduced to 0 hit points, the Watcher collapses into ash and stone, becoming inert for 1d4 days. It is not destroyed. The Black Band will know this has occurred

Actions

Multiattack. The Watcher makes three attacks with the Sword of Astora. One of these attacks can be replaced with Grasp of Judgment.

Sword of Astora. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is Large or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 18 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet and knocked prone.

Grasp of Judgment. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (1d8 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 18). While grappled, the target is restrained and takes 10 (3d8) force damage at the start of each of its turns as sigils burn into its flesh.

Ashen Reprisal (Recharge 5–6). The Watcher raises their sword into the air, releasing a shockwave of ash and force. All creatures within 30 feet must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw:

  • Fail: 27 (10d8) force damage and blinded until the end of their next turn
  • Success: Half damage and not blinded
Bonus Actions

Mark of the Oathbearer. The Watcher targets one creature it perceives as the greatest threat. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom saving throw or be Marked for 1 minute:

  • The Watcher has advantage on attacks against the target
  • The target has disadvantage on attacks against the Watcher
  • The mark ends early if the target sincerely attempts to withdraw or parley
Reactions

Tower of Stone. As a reaction, the Watcher of Ash can raise its armor by 4. Doing so also allows the Watcher to create total cover in one direction. This also gives the Watcher advantage on saving throws against spells and spell-like effects.

If this reaction is taken, the watcher's movement speed becomes 0 until the end of the round and it breaks the Mark of the Oathbearer.

Legendary Actions

The Watcher may take one legendary action at the end of another creature’s turn.

Detect Intent The Watcher makes a Wisdom (Insight) check contested by a creature’s Charisma (Deception or Persuasion). On a success, it gains advantage on its next attack against that creature.

Relentless StepThe Watcher moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Crushing Verdict (Costs 2 Actions) The Watcher makes one sword attack. If it hits, the target is also stunned until the end of its next turn.
