Arcane Fission
When the Amber Amalgam is reduced to 0 hit points by magical damage, it does not die. Instead, it splits.
- First Split:
The Large Amalgam splits into two Medium Amber Amalgams. - Second Split:
Each Medium Amalgam splits into two Small Amber Amalgams (total of four).
Each time the Amalgam splits:
- Its current and maximum hit points are halved
- Its Armor Class is reduced by 2
- Damage, attack bonuses, save DCs, and abilities remain unchanged
- Size changes appropriately (Large → Medium → Small)
If an Amalgam at its smallest size is reduced to 0 hit points by nonmagical damage, it is destroyed.
Nonmagical Collapse
If the Amalgam is reduced to 0 hit points by nonmagical damage, it collapses into inert, viscous sludge and does not split.
Oozy Detonation
Small Amalgams explode if destroyed by magical damage.
- Creatures within 10 feet must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw.
- On a failure, a creature takes 2d8+5 acid damage
- On a success, a creature takes half damage.
Size Progression Summary
| Form | Size | AC | HP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original | Large | 20 | 110 |
| After 1st Split | Medium (×2) | 18 | 55 |
| After 2nd Split | Small (×4) | 16 | 25 |
Multiattack
The Amber Amalgam makes two Pseudopod attacks.
Pseudopod
Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 17).
Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained.
Grappled Improvised Weapon: When the Amalgam makes an attack with a pseudopod holding a grappled creature, the grappled creature takes half of the damage dealt by that attack.
Engulf
The Amalgam moves up to its speed. While doing so, it can enter the space of Large, Medium or smaller creatures.
Each creature whose space it enters must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw.
- On a failure, the creature is engulfed.
- On a success, the creature moves 5 feet to an unoccupied space of its choice.
Engulfed Creature Effects:
- The creature is blinded, restrained, and unable to breathe.
- At the start of each of the Amalgam’s turns, the engulfed creature takes 14 (2d8 + 5) acid damage.
- An engulfed creature can escape by dealing 20 damage to the Amalgam from within on a single turn.
The Amalgam can have up to one Large, two Medium or four Small creatures engulfed at a time.
Devouring Draw
The Amber Amalgam pulls a creature it has grappled deeper into its semi-liquid body.
- One creature grappled by the Amalgam must succeed on a DC 17 Strength or Dexterity saving throw (target’s choice).
- On a failure, the creature is engulfed by the Amalgam (as per its Engulf trait).
- On a success, the creature remains grappled but is not engulfed.
Reflexive Grasp
When a creature within 10 feet misses the Amalgam with a melee attack, the Amalgam may make one Pseudopod attack against that creature.
Description
Amorphous Form
The Amber Amalgam can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide without squeezing.
Transparent Bulk
A creature grappled or engulfed by the Amalgam is visible through its semi-transparent orange body.
A massive, semi-transparent orange ooze that moves with slow, deliberate pulses, this creature engulfs the battlefield like living amber. Its amorphous bulk extrudes amoeba-like tendrils that seize prey and draw them inward, trapping victims within its viscous body where they are slowly dissolved. Arcane energies destabilize its form—when destroyed by magic, it violently divides into smaller, equally dangerous masses, each continuing the hunt with relentless cohesion. Designed to overwhelm through restraint and attrition rather than speed, it thrives in confined spaces and punishes reckless spellcasting.
