Traits

Amphibious. The axolisk can breathe air and water.

Regenerative Form. At the start of its turn, the axolisk regains 5 hit points if it has at least 1 hit point and isn’t in an area of acid or fire damage.

Blissfully Unsettling. Creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to determine the axolisk’s emotional state. It always looks friendly, even while attacking.

Pet Loyalty. If the axolisk has bonded with a creature, it has advantage on saving throws while within 30 feet of that creature.

Actions

The axolisk makes two attacks, one with its bite and one with its tail.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.
Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Tail Slap. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target.
Hit: 10 (2d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Bubble Breath (Recharge 5–6). The axolisk exhales a cloud of shimmering, translucent bubbles in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Constitution saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. On a failed save, a creature is also poisoned until the end of its next turn as the bubbles cling to its face and skin, bursting with numbing toxins.

Description

Axolisks resemble large, soft-bodied dragons with the rounded features of giant axolotls—wide smiles, feathery external gills, smooth pastel scales, and stubby limbs ending in powerful claws. Their coloration ranges from pearlescent pinks and blues to soft lavender or mint green.

Despite their size, they move with surprising grace in water, drifting like living balloons. Their bubble breath appears playful at first—dozens of iridescent orbs floating gently forward—until they pop on contact, releasing potent paralytic toxins.

They are always smiling.
This does not mean they are harmless.

Lore

Axolisks originate in deep, magically saturated waters where draconic bloodlines intersect with elemental and alchemical influence—sunken ruins, ancient cisterns, or flooded laboratories long reclaimed by nature.

They are symbols of persistence and renewal, capable of regenerating injuries that would fell lesser dragons. Alchemists prize their mucus and bubbles, though harvesting either without consent is… ill-advised.

Unlike most dragons, axolisks form strong emotional bonds and can remain at the same developmental stage for centuries, never growing larger or more territorial unless mistreated.

Temperament as a Pet

  • Affectionate and curious

  • Enjoys bubbles, splashing, and being gently patted

  • Will interpose itself between danger and its bonded creature

  • Makes soft “blup” noises when content

  • Extremely dangerous if its bond is threatened

An axolisk does not seek combat—but will end it decisively.

Where a Party Might Find One

  • A flooded ruin with unusually clean, healthy water

  • Guarding an ancient aquatic shrine without understanding why

  • Hatched from an egg mistaken for a decorative crystal

  • Gifted by a powerful aquatic or draconic entity as a test of responsibility

In-World Saying

“If the smiling dragon blows bubbles, you have already waited too long.”
