Traits

Astral Drift. The astral whifflecat can hover up to 2 feet off the ground and can move vertically while floating. While floating, it ignores difficult terrain.

In-Between Body. The whifflecat can move through the space of another creature as if it were difficult terrain, representing its partially astral form.

Elastic Spine. The whifflecat can squeeze through spaces as narrow as 4 inches wide without squeezing, folding and stretching like a ferret.

Actions

Scratch. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 1 Slashing damage.

Nip. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 1 Piercing damage.

Reactions

Momentary Blink. As a reaction when targeted by an attack, the whifflecat briefly phases out of reality, imposing disadvantage on the triggering attack roll.

Description

Astral whifflecats resemble long-bodied cats with ferret-like flexibility—sleek torsos, expressive feline faces, oversized paws, and endlessly curling tails. Their fur is soft and faintly luminous, colored in pale silvers, lavender-grays, or star-speckled black.

Their bodies don’t quite obey gravity. They lounge in midair, sleep curled upside down, and occasionally drift several feet before remembering to land.

Their eyes resemble tiny nebulae—slowly shifting lights suspended in glass.

Lore

The Astral Plane is a realm where thought outweighs matter, and astral whifflecats are creatures that adapted by becoming optional. Scholars believe they evolved from ordinary pets brought into the Astral Plane long ago, reshaped by timelessness and psychic residue.

They feed on curiosity, attention, and scraps of thought rather than food, though they enjoy treats for the experience.

Many gith consider them good-luck omens. Others consider them thieves. Both are correct.

Temperament as a Pet

  • Extremely curious and playful

  • Loves floating through books, packs, and sleeves

  • Steals small items and returns them later

  • Sleeps draped over shoulders or hovering nearby

  • Chirps softly when excited

An astral whifflecat bonds easily but never stays still.

Where a Party Might Find One

  • Drifting through an Astral color pool

  • Wandering a gith outpost or ruined ship

  • Appearing after prolonged astral travel

  • Already asleep in someone’s backpack

In-World Saying

“If the cat is floating, you’ve been thinking too loudly.”
